29 Reasons Why I Teach

I am in my 14th year of teaching. Since beginning my career I have taught in four different schools, seven different grade levels, and two different contents. I am currently teaching Family and Consumer Sciences and twelfth grade English. I’m not sure if I got into education for the same reasons, but today, Februaray 29, 2012 I have 29 reasons for teaching. Here they are:

1. The kids
2. The content
3. Because I truly love the kids
4. Because I truly love the content
5. Because I whole-heartedly believe that I can be a positive influence in someone’s life
6. Because I may be the only person to say “hello” or “how’s your day going?”
7. Because I may have different expectations than the students’ parents therefore exposing them to different views
8. Because I believe that what I teach is sometimes not as important as how I teach it
9. Because I value education
10. Because I want to show my own two children how much I value education
11. Because I do enjoy summertime:)
12. Because I like connecting with students and learning more about them every day
13. Because I know I can’t change the world, but I may be able to change a person
14. Because I think every student should love literature, writing, and baking as much as me
15. Because my students make me laugh every day
16. Because my students make me cry more than I wish
17. Because my family is a family of teachers
18. Because it’s a necessary profession
19. Because it’s what I feel I was made to do
20. Because I’ve considered doing other things but always come back to teaching
21. Because I see how much I’ve grown as a teacher in the past 14 years and am willing to keep growing
22. Because I didn’t want to a child psychologist afterall
23. Because can give rewards and fun prizes
24. Because I get rewarded every day by they’re smiles and charm
25. Because I don’t mind smelling like fried food at the end of the day
26. Because I fell in love with Scout and Jem
27. Because I get to watch kids grow into young adults
28. Because I love the content
29. Because I love the kids.

Just Next to Central Park

Grdeetings! I am teaching at a small school on the Upper East side of Manhattan. We are right next to Central Park in New York City. My students are creating audio mixes in Garage Band from samples they recorded themselves.

Education,Education,Education.

My morning in 29 words :

Optomistic, enthusiastic, prepared to face challenges. Aware of targets, concious of needs.Totally committed.
Two lessons later : attending to the needy, the unsure and the plain can’t be arsed.

Welcome to the world of teaching.

Today I am teaching in a school in Lewisham. So far I have taught reading graphs in Maths and finding features of recounts in Literacy. It is soon lunchtime and I’m going to eat spaghetti bolognaise! My favourite!
After school, I am going to try and go swimming!

Teaching in England

Hello, I am a teacher in a wonderful school in Dorset (SW England) where I teach a fabulous class of year 4 and 5 children. Our class is called Ash class.
This week we are busy enjoying our book week and have also started an exciting Jurassic project. The children are going to be writing stories set in Jurassic times- I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
Teaching is a fabulous job which is extremely rewarding, hardwork and most of all fun! There’s always loads to do, but spending the day with a class of enthusiastic children who love learning, sharing their ideas and finding things out is great.
We have been planning our feb29th blog posts this morning and will be posting them this afternoon- the children have come up with all sorts of interesting ideas and lots of them are planning to share this site with their parents when they get home from school.
We have a class blog and enjoy sharing our work with other children from around the world.
We have been trying to predict how many people will visit this site today- a million is the highest guess!
Looking forward to seeing how many people visit the blog today and from how many countries.
What a fantastic way to bring the world together in one place for one day.

Adding my penny’s worth…

I’ve been teaching all day, from Foundation Stage to Year 6. Year 6 blogged about what they already knew about Judaism and also evaluated ‘Light-Robot’ as an introduction to Control.
My life is becoming more and more involved with technology by the day, be this at home or at school…I’m so glad I enjoy it and hope that I can inspire others with my enthusiasm!

Think positive on Feb29th and everyday

There has been a lot of negative press about teachers lately. From the press, but also from government, Ofsted, unions and others. This post will not contribute to that negativity in any way, indeed I hope this is seen as an antidote.

To start – think of the amazing things that you do every day in the classroom and the effect that is having on your pupils. Then look at other teachers in your school and see what they are doing – are they making a difference? Chances are you won’t have to look that hard.

Three things off the top of my head:

I have been lucky enough to help David Mitchell out today in moderating some posts on the Feb29th website. It is one of the most amazing things that I have seen. At one point, there were posts going up at the rate of one every one-and-a-half seconds. The work that David and Peter have put into making the Feb29th project work is incredible, and the results are simply stunning.
How about Ian Addison’s Under Ten Minutes website? A fab tool for CPD with some great tools explained by teachers for teachers.
The 100 Word Challenge is one of the most innovative and inspiring writing projects I have seen – really inspiring pupils to write

So, my challenge to you… as there is news out there about teaching that it isn’t all negative, think of something positive to say about teaching and the impact that YOU are having in school. Now, go to the Feb29th site and write down what they are

In Loco Parentis?

I’ll be teaching today, 29th Feb 2012. I love my job, my children, and my homelife. We’ll be learning to sew and quilt. We’ll be doing maths and English and stuff as well, but I want my children to know the basics, to know where things come from, how they are made, what they are for and why we have them. I want them to respect the effort put in to the clothes that they wear and the people who made them.

In short, I want my class to know the things I teach my son. I care for them the way I care for my son. I love my son, in ways that I could never explain – he is my son after all! But when those children are with me, and he is with his teacher, he is her responsibility and they are mine.

A lot of the ways of doing things are being lost in Britain. Half my children have never sewn, most have never made bread or baked in any way. That isn’t what I want for my son, why would I want it for my class?

In Loco Parentis. As though they were my own.
