Back to work
Back at work after 2 months with an amazing group of educators from around New Zealand who are dedicated to providing Professional Learning to schools so that we can raise the achievement of our least well-served students – Maori, Pasifika, and students with special educational needs. The new PLD environment starts here, today. I’m up for the challenge!

Time Differences
Today we are actually in Sydney, Australia. But we are usually in New Zealand running our Science Roadshow – Science in a Van.
And today is actually the 1st of March but I know that for many people using this blog – they are still enjoying the extra day of the year. Time differences around the world still amaze us. We are waking up and you are going to bed …
Today is special as we will be attending a good friend’s wedding. She has been praying for a good sunny day. We are involved in the service and it’s really exciting to be part of their new adventure together.
So today we woke up in our backpackers hostel, we soon will be picking up Alan’s suit and ironing Emily’s dress. Jump in a taxi and head off to the wedding. Maybe we’ll have a walk on the beach first????
Today is a good day!

29 Thoughts
Today, there are 29 students present in our class on the 29th of February. This week we have been thinking about our first 4 weeks at school, our achievements and our next steps. So here are our 29 thoughts about learning in our classroom…
1) There are no desks in our classroom! I love being able to work in different spaces.
2) I like being able to work in a “cave ” on my own when I am reading… The round table is a great way to work with others.
3) My favourite subject is writing.
4)I am loving the use of SKYPE to help us connect to experts, find answers and interact classrooms around the world.
5) I love having a blog of my own and am looking forward to adding widgets like badges when I accomplish my writing goals.
6) Conferencing with a buddy helps me improve my writing.
7) I am excited and proud when I get a comment from another teacher from around the world on my blog.
8) I like that we can sit in bean bags and on couches.
9) My favourite space in the classroom is our CAFE (the nickname for our reading corner).
10) I really like Daily 5 during literacy time.
11) Reading to someone else is a challenge for me.
12) I am looking forward to camp!
13) I like going to our junior buddy class and helping them with their reading and reading to them.
14) I like that we have readers from all around the world reading our class blog.
15) My mum likes that she can come and comment on my blog, see what I am up to at school and see photos of us in action.
16) I work best in the quiet cave spaces with no distractions.
17) I like that we can choose the best tool for the job – a laptop, a paint brush or a pen!
18) I am finding the computers tricky but like learning how to display my work.
19) I have a real audience for my writing – this is making me write better.
20) My grandad is in England and he can see what we are up to by reading our blog. We even listened to him talking to us when he left a comment on speak pipe on our blog!
21) I like how we have learning stations in maths and we work with different people.
22) I like having goals in writing and being able to monitor whether I am mastering them or not.
23) I like the Go-Home writing books. When I got 2 Stars an a Wish feedback from everyone, I felt like I had fan mail.
24) I like that I have to do Daily 5 and manage myself at that time.
25) I think our class feels like a library when it is literacy time, a problem solving zone during maths time and a fun busy place during inquiry time.
26) I think it is good that we have clipboards to put our books in for when we are working in beanbags or on the couch.
27) You will see me lying on the floor during inquiry time.
28) We call our teacher conference space a Camp Fire – it’s where we meet Ms B and our learning group.
29) I am happy Ms B says “When you have got it, you can go”… this means I don’t have to sit and listen for a long time and that I can just get on with my learning as soon as I am ready.
These thoughts about our learning so far this year have come from our reflections about ourselves as learners in preparation for our class conferences. Ms B loves that all of these ideas and the running of our learning space has evolved from discussion and ideas shared with her via educators and collaborators who form her PLN!

Our Leap Year Day!
Today we had a class trip to an outdoor education centre. We went rock climbing, built a bivouac, learnt how to kayak and even did some archery! It was sunny and a bit rainy. One of our teachers has a leapster cousin who turned 8 today (actually she is 32!) We think this is pretty cool and quite unique. It was a wonderful day for our class. We came back to school and watched a youtube clip at the end of the day which showed us how leap years work. It was also really cool! Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56zlm9qhVGc&feature=youtu.be here! And happy leap-day!

There is only one “YOU” in the world.
HAPPY LEAP DAY everyone!
As a social media consultant, I’m working on submitting my ideas on social media integration for an Amazon No.1 bestselling author in USA, for his new book. But what I really want to blog about today is “YOU”.
1) Life is a gift. Celebrate the present.
2) Be the best YOU you can be. Work hard. Stay positive. Smile often.
3) If you’re reading this, you are among the fortunate few. Thank God for all the beauty in your life. Help those less fortunate than you.
4) Someone, somewhere loves you right now. You may not know it, but to someone, you mean the world.
5) The world is indeed your oyster. You can do what you want. Believe in yourself. Seize the day. Everyday!
Always remember, there is no one like you. There is only one “YOU” in this world.
Thank you for reading.
With Best Wishes & Kind Regards,
Amar
I pray the world makes a giant leap towards peace & progress in 2012.

End of summer
Here in New Zealand the 29th of February also marks the end of summer. There are blackberries ripening in my garden, and each day I can go out and pick some juicy black ones. I have seen the first of the colourful autumn leaves appearing on the ground. It’s a but odd though, because in six weeks time I am leaving home to fly to Paris- and I will be jumping straight into spring!

Ms B loves that all of these ideas and the running of our learning space has evolved from discussion and ideas shared with her via educators and collaborators who form her PLN!

Celebrating Feb 29th
Today was February 29th! I teach a class of 5 & 6 year olds.
Today we talked about why it was a special day – none of the kids knew why. We watched this cool video on youtube that explained a bit about the leap year:
We agreed that Feb 29th is cool as we get a “free extra day”

Dissolving and Melting
We had a busy afternoon making chocolate crackles with our Newmarket School, Auckland children. This science lesson was with our 6 and 7 year old children. The children have been learning the difference between dissolving and melting. Straight after they had conducted their experiment the children left to go on their overnight camp at the Auckland Zoo. By the time they left, their experiment had solidified and so was eaten before they boarded the bus.

I’m an Englishman in NZ
I’m from London but currently on a 3 month holiday (yes, lucky me!) and on Leap Day I’m in Auckland, New Zealand. I took the ferry over to Waiheke Island and after a bus tour I hired a bike and went for a cycle around. Funnily enough for a volcanic island it really isn’t flat! Those 3 hours of riding gave me quite a workout, but it was great fun, despite my terrible map reading and multiple wrong turns, although what a lovely place to get lost in! And a clay oven cooked pizza by the beach ended my trip very nicely too.

Leap year at work
Kia ora, and greetings from New Zealand.
It’s a work day. I’m sitting in my office in Hamilton, NZ in the FAculty of Education, at the University of Waikato.
Some of the things I’ve done already today include:
I’ve written a position paper (more on that below), checked Twitter feeds, emailed and read stuff, posted and amended stuff in Moodle for my students (these students have just started their initial teacher education course, sot hey can become secondary school teachers in New Zealand), followed up some leads and conversations, had coffee (also did the Codecraker and easy Sudoko puzzles in the paper). After I did some more thinking, reading writing and re-drafting, I had lunch, chatted with colleagues, read the Board of Studies minutes, and will be shortly going to our Faculty of Education’s Board of Studies monthly meeting. After that, I’m going home because I’m still recovering from a lung infection that’s laid me low for nearly two weeks. Thank goodness the anti-infection drugs work!
The position paper relates to how our professional research journal (the Waikato Journal of Education) needs to start thinking about becoming open source and Creative Commons licenced, and what some implications might be. We have a meeting about that in a week or so, so I needed to lay out some of the issues in an easy-to-follow, easy-to-read-at a glance format. That led me to check out a variety of sources online, and synthesise the information. I’ve now sent the draft of that to my boss, the Director of WMIER (Wilf Malcolm Institue of Educational Research).
Gotta go- Board of Studies meeting is now!

Self portraits
We are doing an artist study on Rita Angus. She is a New Zealand artist who does portraits. We searched her work on the internet and are creating our own self portraits inspired by her art. We have already talked about her art, drawn our face shapes, planned our backgrounds and today we will get to working on our final pieces. Check our blog for our progress.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to connect with many people all over the world. We think 29th Feb is a brilliant idea.
