The thing about not having a job (being unemployed) is that I really thought I might be bored, or may be I would get chance to read or write, may be even watch a bit of day time TV in between a frantic search for work. It’s not really planned out that way and though I haven’t totally given up on someone employing me I’m seeing working for myself as a much more attractive option. There’s a lot of ageism out there and though I’m not old … I’m old enough for people to feel like they wouldn’t be able to tell me what to do. It’s a problem but one I’m increasingly happy with.
So, today I woke at 6.00am. Years of an early morning commute means I’m still waking very early. I check the news and tweet the interesting bits, then it’s up, breakfast and driving my eldest to school.
The traffic is ridiculous and I have the usual thoughts about the fact it would only take 40 minutes to walk or if there was a bus that ran at sensible times … anyway, it’s my usual rant to myself.
Then home for vacuuming, washing up after breakfast, clean washing out of the washing machine, dirty washing in, stove cleaning (I never know what to do with the ash), coffee making for my work-at-home partner then it’s whizz out the door for a brisk walk to a friends house. I’m helping her with a tricky picture research – forty obscure images illustrating energy from the 19th Century. It was challenging but good to work the brain and help a friend. We got really engrossed, so much so that I forgot about taking my eldest to evensong, so ended up madly rushing out having made a good start but still having a way to go.
On the way back from choir I hooked by Sainsbury’s to get supper and milk. Fifty two pounds later and having resisted anything that even slightly looks like a treat I drove back home to make supper. We had chicken as a special treat for it being the 29th though eldest has given up meat so I replaced her chicken with mushrooms – not sure she was terribly impressed.
My evening has been spent working on a new business I’m hoping to set up. People I’ve run my idea by love it so spurred on I plan and work on the set up. It’s going to be great doing my own thing rather than working for people who know less than me but get paid more.
So, my day’s finishing with my very first blog post and a quick job search – got to look willing despite me hoping to go into business for myself.
I’m struck as my blog comes to an end how lucky we are in the UK. Some of the people in countries in the list ‘Where you are posting from?’ are having such a tough time at the moment. Things sometimes feel tough in the UK but really we are so lucky and we all need to appreciate it more.
