Take a Leap of Faith
Do you want to be the person who sits on their deathbed wondering “what if?” Every time you open your mouth to say what you feel, or try something that has you afraid, or open yourself up to a new experience you are taking a risk. Have faith. Even the bad things that happen are lessons we need to learn in this life.
Wayne Gretsky said that he missed “100% of the shots he didn’t take”. Everything in life is a risk. You can sit on the shelf your whole life and miss the whole damn thing. Don’t do it.

Happy Birthday SuperNet
One of the new projects I get to work on is the SuperNet – which is the Big Network which connects every school in Alberta. Alberta is very large geographically so it is a big network – It encompasses over 12,000 km fibre-optic cable and 1,814 km wireless connections! We are celebrating by making plans to get all of the new schools being built connected to the network!
February 29 is a special day for the SuperNet because it is the SuperNet’s birthday. The original funding proposal which started the building of this massive network was released 12 years ago today on February 29, 2000 (a cool date because a leap year only hits a year ending in 00 every 400 years!)

Calling it a night
Today was Anti-Bullying Day in British Columbia. The pink shirt campaign raised awareness in our schools and businesses. A fitting way to celebrate Leap Day. Here’s to Anti-Bullying Day and to Leap Day! Too bad they’re both so few and far between.

Watching My Students Blog
My class (ages 12,13 & 14) and I joined in the blogging project this afternoon. None of them, except 2 or 3, really like to write for enjoyment. Writing has been a chore but slowly the writing environment is changing. We started participating in the Quadblogging project in January and now my students have an authentic audience reading their blogs. They like writing and commenting on kids’ blogs but I wasn’t sure how this would go today. The audience is bigger and they haven’t made those personal connections so what would they write? Would they rush through without care since it was more anonymous or would they take their time with their writing because they know someone might read it. Of course, a couple put forth a quick effort but others painstakingly wrote out lists of their 29 favourite songs, games etc. Even when our time was over and I was trying to rush them to finish up, they were still wanting to type their last favourite food for the world to see! As I reflect on this now,I see that they have grown as bloggers and writers. No longer will a few quickly chosen words do, they are thinking about their writing and communicating their thoughts for an authentic audience! Priceless! Thanks David Mitchell for the experience! Tomorrow we will be reading, commenting and learning about the world around us!

Pioneering
Today, as I sat reading the latest global comments on our PILOT classroom blog, with our Grade Three students, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. We are, indeed, pioneering a classroom blog within our system. And, it is TRULY an AMAZING gift. My partner teacher and I knew, going in, that the educational benefits of blogging would be worth it. But, NEITHER of us were prepared for the DEPTH of learning and the engagement of these eight and nine year olds. Yup! This blog is a GIFT! http://globalgrade3.cbegloballearning.ca/

Little things
Had one of those great days where all the little things went right. Was walking to work and got offered a ride by a neighbour. The lady I work with brought in home made cookies and was eager to share. I found a favourite earring that had been missing for several days. I had thought it lost for good, but it had fallen into an inside pocket of my coat. I came home prepared for a huge pile of dishes and my husband had already done the bulk of them. Feb 29th may well be my favourite day this year.

Inspired by Grade 3s
Today I am writing the final section of my Master’s of Education project. My topic is the use of technology to enrich global citizenship. The fact I get to write about the amazing work of our Grade 3 students makes my heart happy. The Grade 3s at our school are making a difference in the world, particularly in Q’enqo, a small village in Peru. Our students are helping to build a school library for the children of Q’enqo. March 5th is the first day of the school year in Q’enqo and it is also the grand opening of the library. Every single day I am inspired by the passion, heart and commitment of our 8 year old students. Not only have they created change in the lives of others, they too have been deeply changed by the experience. These Global Grade 3s are documenting their journey of learning in a blog and they would love to share their story with you. http://globalgrade3.cbegloballearning.ca/ I am so grateful to be able to spend Feb. 29th continuing to write about the Peru project, for as a teacher I have not had a more profound experience in my career.

Ponderings for the morning
I woke up tired again this morning. It feels like forever that I have not felt rested as my alarm sounds each morning. I have another busy day ahead of me. Meetings at work, training in the morning and an exercise to observe in the afternoon. Afterwards, I will be looking towards dancing and perhaps some volunteer time.
Each morning, although I don’t dwell on it too much, I think of this amazing, yet strange situation I find myself in…
Today, like any other day, I go to work to a job I love, yet there is an air of uncertainty if I will have one in a few weeks/months…as they will be cutting staff and positions (the joys of deficit reductions). What will I do if I lose this job (in a city that will have an influx of people also loosing theirs)?
I have the pleasure of dancing a fair number of times throughout the week (this one being no exception). Between ballroom, pole and swing…I can really feel the amazing work-out qualities as my legs/arms/core feel stronger each day. Tonight will be swing dancing which I know I’ll have a blast. I am still waiting for a return call to start Swing Boot Camp. I heard the great news that my audition to join an All-Female Solo Charleston Troupe…yet I still haven’t gotten further deets.
Then there is my boyfriend (I word I was never fond of until him), strange how someone can come into your life so unexpectedly and change things so much. He is living half-way around the world, following his dreams (as I follow mine), and as we both live our lives, we are able to come together to support each other. I truly love this relationship and even with the long distance, I can feel such a close and enjoyable connection even if we don’t talk for days or weeks. I know he is there, and he knows I am here. What a guy:)
Oh my….look at the time!
Well, as I roll out of bed…making my way around the disaster zone (just moved a bunch of wood, lathe and carving table in late last night) that is my living room/kitchen. It is time for work, time to put a smile on my face and show the world that I shall not be defeated! As I push thoughts of what will happen to me in the coming weeks and months….Do I look for another job now? Do I travel elsewhere? Do I go back to what I did before? Do I pack my dance gear now or chance getting back home to change? Do I have time to stop for chocolate milk on my way to work? Do I have time to post my pictures on my blog today? Do I call my mother now, or wait till I’m closer to work? …I go to work knowing my day will be jam-packed.

Talking about Blogging with Teachers
Today I am talking to a group of secondary/high school teachers about why they should be Blogging with their students, and how to get started. I teach Middle School students, and the sooner they know the skills of blogging, linking, embedding, tagging, sharing, etc. the better they will be able to embrace the styles of writing required for communicating in the 21st century.
