Today I painted a picture of a big mountain and put some lines across it so me and my Grandad could climb up it! At the top of the mountain it feels like I was gonna fall of. I jumped off and Freddie caught me!

Today!!

Hi, I’m 38 and a Deputy Head teacher in Surrey. I’ve had a busy day at work supporting colleagues, teaching children (yr2, art today) and lots of organising. I really love my job and couldn’t think of another profession I would gain so much from. I have a great supportive family, so was able to come home to dinner cooking and a huge cuddle from my 9 year old son. We just played WII Party and I won the board game – Hooray!!!

Being an ICT Technician

What a busy day today. Not that that’s much different from any other day just recently! I have a list that fills an A4 page and I’m somehow expected to get through this. Phew!

Taking a moment out to write this post and add my contribution to this great project. I have also made some time this morning for emailing around the three schools I support to try and get them blogging on here. Hopefully we will be seeing some posts from some of the children (and teachers?!) from these schools. Very positive responses from two of them, so fingers crossed!

Time to get back to work…

Unemployed – Yay?

Sat in my back room trying to learn how to record Excel tutorials using Camtasia – this is very powerful, and is making my PC struggle. It also shows up that despite how good my tutorials are in my head, they are not the same when spoken out loud. Something to work on – oh an a better mic is needed.

Will have some lunch now – and then take the dogs for a walk. The joys of being unemployed.

Suppose I had better send my CV off to a few more places this afternoon as well.

Life in an Outstanding School

Yet another busy day full of 30 great kids, a lesson observation, yet another book scrutiny, best friends, a 5 month old baby and lots of washing up! February 29th may only come once every 4 years, but (un)fortunately days like today are ten a penny!

Busy Day

I’ve been preparing for tomorrow’s Kumon session at my lovely Centre in Deepcut. I’m also thinking about my wedding in April and all the things I need to do to make that a special day for my fiance and all our friends and family.
I think this is a great project and it’s been brilliant to see all the comments.

Busy busy busy! :-)

Today was a fairly typical day as a busy working Mum. Up at six to get things ready for school. E mails done before getting my little one up and ready for school. Bags packed with swimming kit, etc. Breakfast everyone then dog and girl to my Mum’s.. I would never manage without her!
Then it’s drive to school. Dealing with staff and parents immediately and get resources ready. Use of the internet, e mail, USB stick and interactive whiteboard all used by 8am.. Don’t remember how people taught before without them!
Busy busy day at school teaching. Lunch duty, school photo day, planning meeting with a teacher, governor’s meeting then a quick dash home to pick up my daughter and take her to perform in a show at the local school with ‘Young Americans’ visiting group. Inspirational show and I was a very proud Mum :-)
Then it’s daughter home and ready for bed before sorting out my costume for World Book Day at school tomorrow! Horrid Henry it is!
Now sitting down to do school work. Have worked on the go all day checking and responding to e mails on my iPhone which I could never live without! Not to mention the tweeting, texting and Facebook posts today!
The way I see it I have two jobs.. Mum and Deputy Head. I love them both and think they are the best jobs in the world!
Life is what you make it and I think teaching children and being a Mum have made my life pretty brilliant! :-)

A good day!

Had a fun, busy day today. Taught Year 6 and Year 5 ‘Thinking Maths’ lessons in the morning. It was really rewarding seeing the children actively engaged in their tasks, thinking about numbers and explaining their thinking. Some of the Year 5s were able to generate formulas for number patterns, which was good to see. Most importantly, they said it was a fun lesson – something I think is really important.

Year 6 had to solve a crime mystery – someone had kidnapped Joe the Crow from my classroom! The culprit left behind some vital evidence – a footprint and a hat. The children had to measure their own height, foot length and head circumference – partly to eliminate themselves from the list of suspects, and also to try to find a relationship between their measurements, that we could use to estimate the height of the culprit and identify them from our ‘wanted’ list.

This was another fun lesson which saw the children actively engaged in measuring and looking at relationships between measurements. We found that on average, our height was 6 times our foot length and 2.75 times our head circumference -give it a try and see what you find out!

In the afternoon we went to a local secondary school for a DT project. The Y6 pupils completed a jigsaw which they’d started last week. They had designed it on a PCand the pieces were cut out by a laser cutter. We’re very lucky to have access to such useful technology! And as an extra perk, my colleague and I got tea and biscuits – a rare treat for an afternoon!

Then it was back to school where a colleague and I reviewed some video footage of lessons, then a staff meeting and preparing resources. After the staff meeting I popped outside to get some photos of a squirrel in the trees outside my classroom – we’re very lucky to have lots of trees and wildlife around the school – and noticed how light and warm it was. Spring is definitely on its way!

I’m now watching the England vs Holland game with a cat next to me. A nice relaxing end to an enjoyable day.

A Pi, a goodbye and a lacrosse match…

This morning I woke up at ten to six, in order to try to secure myself the purchase of a much anticipated Raspberry Pi. The distributors’ websites crashed very early on due to the strain of the many such geeks as myself – all trying to access them at the same time. Sadly, I failed in that particular mission – however I have placed a pre-order for the next batch – which is expected about a month or so from now.

Usually, I would be on a train to University at 7:23 – however today I was bunking lectures due to attending the scattering of the ashes of an old friend. I had seen my grandmother’s ashes scattered in Stockport, but the crematorium in my home town did things a little differently. It was an unseasonably warm and bright day as we walked out to pick a spot on the chosen plot, and as the Crematorium Manager finished scattering, the sun came out from behind a cloud – as if Terry had smiled on us. Those assembled went for a coffee afterwards, and all in all it was quite a peaceful and ‘closing’ experience.

At half past one, as there was little point in traveling to my very-out-of-town campus for the tail end of a lecture, I drove down to the sports park, where my University women’s lacrosse team were going to play a league match. Due to my commitment in the morning, I had agreed to play. I am a goaltender (though not a very good one yet!) and we were taking on Imperial College – who had beaten us on their turf, 20-0 before Christmas! We gave them a shock when we came out all guns blazing, and they were surprised by how much we had improved in such a short space of time. We had a really hard-fought match, and lost 5-17 – which was better than we had been expecting! There was some great work from the team, and we really gave them a run for their money on every play. I must have saved as many as I let in – and I was very pleased with some of them! I’m becoming a lot more confident in my own abilities etc. nowadays – and as soon as I can fix up my footwork and get my moving around more fluid – I should hopefully start to become a force to be reckoned with! The feeling I got when I charged out for the groundball which was being fought over, with my helmet down, stick in the ground, shouting my throat raw to scare them off – was amazing, especially when it came off and I scooped up the ball!

I then came home, had a shower, and I’m now writing this post! I think that I have made quite thorough and good use of this ‘extra’ day! :-) I now have to work out what I am going to have for tea. Time to get the beers in I think!

Bonus Day

A long day – recovering from getting the kitchen made over and the ceiling in the living room – also getting skimmed by a plasterer yesterday… Add to that only a couple of hours sleep – and you have a busy day. Teach – collect minibus – go to a slightly frustrating meeting – teach – get kit ready for team – drive to venue – enjoy company of colleague from rival school – relish quality grass lovingly looked after by Independent School groundstaff – take early goal – then end up losing 2-3… back to school – gather kit – resort Google calendar entry – muse about clash I should have seen but didn’t when asked – wonder why the other person couldn’t have looked it up themselves – home through heavy traffic – wife unhappy – washing machine doesn’t work – chips for tea – takeaway reflecting transitory nature of home situation – painting to be done when the ceiling dries out – meanwhile dog needs walking – work piles up (again) parents evening tomorrow night – where do the weeks go? England v Holland in background – stomach heavy – smoke from neighbours still a potential worry and issue – think better tomorrow – hate to think weekend soon… lol

First ever blog

Hi, I’ve been teaching at school all day, and running the library at lunchtime. I’ve cycled home now and I’m thinking about what to dress up as for World Book Day tomorrow. I’m thinking Mr Magnolia. I’ve never written a blog before, but I’d love to think about setting one up at my school.

A Weeks scedual

You’ll never guess how busy I am, all week, every week! Because Well… Monday: Bridge Club and Piano. Tuesday: A very hard, and tiring swimming lesson 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday: I help in with our school band, playing the recorder and again a tougher swimming lesson but earlier 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday: I use to have a tutor but now I’ve stopped because it’s a bit too much of a rush getting from my mothers Stitch craft club, into Wimbledon. Friday: Well I do another harder and even tougher swimming lesson but its even later! 7pm. to 8 p.m.
Then we come to Saturday: I go to my mum’s stitch craft in the Wimbledon Trinity Church. But straight after that I have to go to tennis, the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Invitation or for sort the WJTI. Finally Sunday: and now only swimming, in the morning 7.30 a.m. to 9.00 a.m.
But that happens every week, every month, every year. Non-stop!

Busy Day!

We are going on a whole school trip to Abington Park Museum (Northampton) this morning, arriving back in school for lunch. Then we will organise our classrooms and books for Parents’ Evening, which is later today, whilst blogging the Leap Year (Spratton Primary).
When all that’s done, and after my last appointment at 7pm, I’m heading to Earls Barton for a choir practice!
See you back here later with Class Three, have a great day :)

BigLeapWednesday

I will be watching my grandchild play a game in the early morning.
I will go to work with my daughter, which is in a school.
I will introduce my 3rd year and TY students to Feb29th blogging day and invite them to take part and tell the world what they are up to today.
I will take class with my 6th years and discuss genetic engineering.
I will try to get some of my ToDo list done. Probably won’t .
I will walk up and down lots and lots of stairs.
I will supervise student areas in school during lunchtime, and I will eat lunch.
I will have a planning meeting after school.
I will go home, go for a walk, eat dinner with my family, knit, and sleep (maybe not in that order).
I will track online the delivery status of a very special present ordered for my Dad, and keep my fingers crossed that it is en route to arrive in time.
I will NOT drink coffee.
I will be happy (apart from the no coffee part)
