Global learning opportunities
Today several of our classes have joined in the Feb29 project. They really enjoyed it and for most it was their first experience of blogging, so a double positive!
I really hope today will inspired more educators globally to involve their children in blogging and that it will include linking with communities around the world. We can learn so much from the diversity and richness of the experiences and knowledge of others in different countries. We need to expand our classrooms and go global!
Thank you to David and your team of helpers for facilitating today. It’s been a great success on every level.

Lovely gift
Extra gift day of the year, almost 3 pm around here. Great weather, mild, bright, sunny. What I did so far and and am planning to do yet:
- had a good night’s rest, thank you ![]()
- get things and shopping done downtown
- walk the dogs with a friend who looks by occasionally
- get new bifocal glasses – important at my age!
- cook lunch for everyone: rabbit & polenta
& glass of beer
- take a power nap
- do some translation work
- do some gardening
- go to the atelier to get some drawing done
- meet at the restaurant with friends for pizza
So – hopefully – it will be a really lovely day.
Same to you, folks.

Extra journey time
Today, I’m at my ‘other’ office in Hendon, North London, but to get here I had to go on the M25 today, which today was frought with many delays. All this meant I could stay in the car for longer and listen to my favorite morning Radio show, Chris Evans. So even though there were hassles, good things arose

Leap year baby wait
We are expecting our first baby here in Palawan, Philippines. The wait goes on, my birthday 3 days ago (i would have called him “Martin” too), now leap year day, a special day. My girlfriend is not very keen on giving birth today, she doesn’t want Alfonso to be born today, but I think it is a special unique day. I have only experienced 12 of them in my life, so what’s the problem ? There were some twinges and backpains early in the day, but since then …… nothing, only the regularly movements , becoming more and more restricted in my girlfriend’s womb. I would be proud to be born on Leap Year Day, as long as i have a real birthday, on 1st March, on non-Leap Year Days.
So the wait goes on, now i guess Alfonso will be a March baby, only a few hours left to find out. My girlfriend has a history of quick births, wish Alfonso luck in his arrival …….

BIKI
Februar ganz besonders darauf.
——
I try it in english:
Why does the sunflower core know that it should grow up once to a sunflower and not become a tomato? It is about such thoughts today with the springlike BIKI. BIKI is called BIBLE BOX and means a child service on Wednesday for children between 3 to 10 years. Up to 40 children comes from our two churches (reformed and Catholic), but also from free churches or from parental homes in which the parents never go or seldom to a church. Thus we can sow in child hearts and I am glad in this springlike, warm Swiss 29th of February particularly about it.

Twenty Years From Now……
I’m sitting in the ICT suite at Wray Common School in Reigate, about to write my blog for what I hope to be doing in 20 years time.
In 20 years time, I hope to be travelling around Europe in my sports car, roof down, wind blowing in my hair. I very much hope I’m still fit and healthy, because I’d still like to be riding my bike and going for a run now and then. Hopefully, I will have travelled a lot more than I have now, seen some amazing sights and met some interesting people. I would like to think I could share all this with the people that matter to me most.

Can I leap the day?
My girlfriend, Jenni, has BiPolar disorder. This means that she has highs and lows in mood. Sadly, the lows far outweigh the highs by a long way. Yesterday, we went into London to take part in a walk. We both really enjoyed this although it was a little physically demanding after a while. When we got back home, she was obviously in pain (dodgy knee too) and went to bed.
Today, she has crashed. She’s really low. She’s already crashed once this year and stayed in the local mental health establishment for over a week. Her psychiatrist has been attempting to update her drugs to a point that brings her up to some sort of normal level. Unfortunately, they haven’t found a combination that works. This means that Jenni may have to go back onto her old combination which had unpleasant side-effects like profuse sweating and shaking. But, on balance, that’s better than her bing suicidal.
I sit at the PC typing this awaiting a phone call from Jenni’s psychiatrist to see what can be done.

Big Day
Gr8 Humanities Day: outstanding, in fact! Sociology students excelled in doing observation research on Gender achievement and then wore the Thinking Hats, very stylish. (Note – am very inspired by the new TASC Learning Wheel – check it out! Thanks Mrs Butcher.) Then on to Year 11 RE lesson, great fun rearranging the Easter Story into the correct order! Finished off with some Extended Projects – Dental Phobia (my favourite subject – not!), Product Placement in films and a Tryptich painting of an Angel- all fascinating projects….. Doing Geography in my spare time today -as now want to adopt a snow leopard with the WWF, only 35 left in the wild! The world is so fragile – let’s all do something to help. Being in Humanities is an inspiring place ! Thanks for the day!

Leap Day at Crow Lane Primary School
Today in Crow Lane Primary School we celebrated the birthdays of two Leaplings – Leap Day birthday girls, who were 2 (really 8) today! We had a huge cake, a special assembly and lots of activities about Leap Day. The local paper came and took photos and interviewed our birthday girls. In the afternoon, a theatre company staged a performance of Wizard of Oz. What a great day and one I know our Leaplings will remember for a long time!

My Day
I am a fourth grade teacher in Edina, Minnesota, USA. We had a rain and snow storm last night so our school start time was delayed by two hours to give the plows a chance to remove the snow from the roads and streets. It is around 35 degrees right now so it is very sloppy snow. This is only the second time in 20 years that school has been delayed.

What do you want to do in life?
I am reading a blog post I made on another blog and thought I would share it with you.
We had an online questionnaire to do at our school a while back with our 6 and 7 year olds. I read the questions and the child had to decide wether it was yes or no. Here are some of the questions and answers.
‘Do you know how to make your self a better reader?’
‘wear my glassess’
‘Do you know what to do if someone bullies you?’
‘Yes hit em back!’
‘Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?’
‘Yep a dad’
‘Do you want to go to university?’
‘yes’
‘But do you know what university is?
‘Yes a planet!’
‘Do you know how to make yourself better at Maths?’
‘Yes really look at the numbers’
I love kids! They always bring a smile to my face.

I want to be healthy and happy in 2032. I shouldnt be working by then, however I love what I do so if I am I would probably be happy.I think one of my favourite pastimes, which is eating out might be very different we might be taking tablets to get all our nutrition. I think that would be very sad as I love to cook and entertain friends. When I think about how the world will be I think of cars that can take you from one place to another in a flash. Holidays in places we can only imagine and hobbies that have not yet been invented.

Unemployed – Yay?
Sat in my back room trying to learn how to record Excel tutorials using Camtasia – this is very powerful, and is making my PC struggle. It also shows up that despite how good my tutorials are in my head, they are not the same when spoken out loud. Something to work on – oh an a better mic is needed.
Will have some lunch now – and then take the dogs for a walk. The joys of being unemployed.
Suppose I had better send my CV off to a few more places this afternoon as well.

CC Blogs the Day
We are all gathered together blogging the day. We have a little revolution going on in school. In partnership with Google we have been spearheading the development of Google Apps for Education in conjunction with the Independent Schools Association (isanet.ning). This has been really exciting. The children are enthused; they are taking ownership of the work. They blog, they mail, they work collaboratively with each other and with me. They send me little projects they have been working on, not always stuff they have been asked to do. Sometimes they just say “Hello”. Some are even combining the technologies of Google Docs and Skype, having online conversations with each other, in real time.
This IS the future – go for it!

Anything Goes Day
On Anything Goes Day ( 29 th February) I spent the day climbing mountains and free falling! Not literally ….. I am a teacher and feel that describes my day! By climbing mountains I mean trying to make things happen, to get the students to move along with their understanding of their world and what will help them succeed in it. By free falling I mean coping with things that are out of my control and sometimes deflating and debilitating.
Today we were free falling because the education electronic mailing site was “down”! How much we rely on it to communicate, share, inquire and inform! At one point during the day I had to try to communicate by ringing on a land line… no one answered! It’s much easier and time efficient to email and then the respondent can answer in their own time.
I often think if the internet went down ( I know – don’t even think about it!!!) I wouldn’t know how to pay my bills, communicate with family and friends around the globe, research recipes and teaching ideas, get directions, find a replacement for “googling”, do my shopping, find bargains, research movies or books and the list goes on!
Who says people over 50 can’t adapt to change?!?!

Preparing for an Exhibition
I am a member of an art group in our village (Clowne Art group) and we have an annual exhibition every Easter, to show off what we work we have been producing through the year. This week, I have begun to get ready for it, and am deciding what to put on show and which paintings will fit into my existing frames, and what needs something new. Some members find it easier than others to sell a painting. It can be quite difficult, which is not really surprising when you think how many times in your life you actually buy something to put on your walls at home.
There are many more occasions when a greetings card is needed, and our local Wilkinsons sells suitable card blanks and envelopes. I therefore run a few off on the printer at home, put them into cellophane bags I buy on e-bay and display them on a small stand at the event. This usually ensures I don’t have to go home empty handed from this particular event. Sometimes I attend other events too, but if neither cards nor paintings sell, I don’t bother with those particular ones again. The great thing about producing cards is that I can give any that don’t sell away to friends and family.
Frames are expensive, even from Wilkinsons, so I display some of my paintings wrapped in cellophane, with cardboard at the back. This helps keep the paintings clean as well as looking as if I have at least made some effort with presenting them. I did buy about 9 or 10 frames at one go a few years ago, but they don’t stay pristine for long and take up storage space at home. Canvases are usually displayed unframed.
I also produce a small information brochure about our group members, which is free for visitors to pick up, and last year I also put together a display for people thinking of joining, to encourage them to come to the group. We always welcome new members of any ability, but they need to be over 18 for insurance reasons, and need to be able to work on their own.
We set up the exhibition on Good Friday, which takes all afternoon, and as well as paintings, I make sure I take along a homemade cake and tombola prize, which is often an unwanted Christmas present.
If you have enjoyed reading this, I have a blog “Jewel’s Arty Blog” at http://jewelsartyblog.blogspot.com/ where you can follow my progress with various different paintings. I also give updates on the art group members, and feature other local artists, arts organisations and craftspeople from time to time. I update it at least once a week. Linked from this are my blogs on belly dancing and one for our pet cat.

Feb is almost over
Well, the night is moving on and Feb 29th is almost over. To all you Feb 29 babies, hope you had an awesome birthday celebration.
We move on to the month of March – it is supposed to “come in like a Lion, and end like a Lamb” . On the east coast of the United States it has been like a “lamb” all winter – hopefully the month will not reverse this age old characteristic. It was interesting to be part of this international blogging party; to see what is going on in the lives of others, especially how blogging is used in schools around the world. The inspiration is great!

Watching My Students Blog
My class (ages 12,13 & 14) and I joined in the blogging project this afternoon. None of them, except 2 or 3, really like to write for enjoyment. Writing has been a chore but slowly the writing environment is changing. We started participating in the Quadblogging project in January and now my students have an authentic audience reading their blogs. They like writing and commenting on kids’ blogs but I wasn’t sure how this would go today. The audience is bigger and they haven’t made those personal connections so what would they write? Would they rush through without care since it was more anonymous or would they take their time with their writing because they know someone might read it. Of course, a couple put forth a quick effort but others painstakingly wrote out lists of their 29 favourite songs, games etc. Even when our time was over and I was trying to rush them to finish up, they were still wanting to type their last favourite food for the world to see! As I reflect on this now,I see that they have grown as bloggers and writers. No longer will a few quickly chosen words do, they are thinking about their writing and communicating their thoughts for an authentic audience! Priceless! Thanks David Mitchell for the experience! Tomorrow we will be reading, commenting and learning about the world around us!

music from Africa
we are studying at Goldington Academy in Bedford England. We are a year 5 class called 5H and we have just started looking at african music. Today we learnt about different African instruments and how they produce sound. We looked at, held and played some of the instruments before writing and drawing about them. We are now off to have a short break before the final lesson of the morning.

Take a Leap of Faith
How many of us have a dream, a wish, a desire to do something but we’re held back by a lack of confidence, bad use of our time or we simply don’t think we’ll ever be able to accomplish that one thing so we don’t even take the first shaky step?
Well today is 29th February 2012 and it’s time for me to start.
I’m going to Take a Leap of Faith in myself and start writing the book I have dreamed of writing for two decades. It may well be rubbish but if I don’t try I’ll never know.

BIKI
Februar ganz besonders darauf.

Working in Education
I’ve been in some sort of a school for most of my life. I think I have almost avoided going out into the “Big Bad World” too by staying “inside” education. I’ve gone from Primary to Post Primary, to a couple of Colleges as a student and then into a job as a teacher.
Then, I got a job in the NCTE in Ireland, where I work in teaching teachers about bringing ICT into their classrooms. I’m still a teacher though, so the “Big Bad World” has got closer, but is still an arm’s length away (ish).
I’ve always enjoyed teaching, whether it the students were kids or adults. It’s the buzz of the interaction, the development of ideas (new to me or them) that has kept it fresh for me.
So, the “Big Bad World” will just have to wait a little longer I guess.

An extra day
I have had to put my location as United Kingdom but it’s not. I live on a beautiful island in the middle of the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man. Many people have never heard of it, many of those that have think it is all about either the TT Races or is a Tax Haven. To me it is now home, a place I am always glad to return to. I am what is called over here a ‘comeover’, possibly I have earned the right to be called a ‘stopover’ or maybe that won’t happen for a couple of decades yet. The island has a rich culture, it is so easy to be involved with the arts or with sports. It is a wonderful place to live, not perfect but then nowhere is. Today was an ‘extra’ day and I have been fortunate enough to spend it doing things I love in a wonderful place.
After seeing my daughter to the local school I had a day painting, I am learning how to use acrylics and today was the 3rd of 3 sessions, (the first was on 1st of Feb). I actually completed a picture and even more amazing I actual like what I have created. It started out as a picture of interesting blue and purple clouds with some trees in front, from a couple of photos, however part way through I realised that some of my clouds looked very solid and more like islands on a yellow sea. Following a chat with the tutor, a wonderful artist named Petrina, I decided to turn my skyscape into more of a sea or lakescape. The colours are not in the least realistic, but as far as I am concerned the picture now works and I am proud of it. Creating it was fun and I am all fired up to have another go.
This evening I went to a play reading with the local drama group. We are reading plays to try to choose one to perform at the end of May (during the TT festival). I joined this group a year ago and have found most of the people to be very pleasant and interesting. There was a new member there tonight, he is a butler and did face a bit of an interrogation during the coffee break about his fascinating job. The play we read was Billy Liar, I had heard of this but never seen or read it before tonight. All the people reading did a good job and it was a most enjoyable evening.
So how lucky have I been today, living on a wonderful island and able to spend the day doing things I love with a range of interesting people? I didn’t even have to cook the tea tonight- we had a chippy tea. It is back to the usual daily routine tomorrow but at least I will still be here on the amazing Isle of Man.

A great day … teaching ?
What a great day in school! Interactive learning taking place throughout school using authors and storytellers, people sharing their living memories of WWII and children educating other children through drama. A truly creative writing and thinking week! Well done to all involved – I’m proud to be part of a thriving learning environment!

Pioneering
Today, as I sat reading the latest global comments on our PILOT classroom blog, with our Grade Three students, I couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. We are, indeed, pioneering a classroom blog within our system. And, it is TRULY an AMAZING gift. My partner teacher and I knew, going in, that the educational benefits of blogging would be worth it. But, NEITHER of us were prepared for the DEPTH of learning and the engagement of these eight and nine year olds. Yup! This blog is a GIFT! http://globalgrade3.cbegloballearning.ca/

An extra day?
Today should feel like an extra day with extra events or happenings but it doesn’t…….It has been a normal day.
Work – usual management tasks. Quick walk at lunchtime – usual walk to the dock and back. More work. Home. Tea. Long discussion with my teenage son about homework and how much he dislikes it. Then out to a friends house with lots of other friends – lots of talk, it’s nice to catch up.
So same old, same old but that’s no bad thing

So many things
Busy marking, planning and organising activities for my science and IT classes today. Experiments to cover and details to be discussed with year level leaders. I had to cover somebodies senior class for accounting, call some parents to discuss their their child’s progress and host a lunchtime meeting of the Junior Science Club. At various odd moments of the day, I caught up with my email and twitter feeds with my PLN. A quick bite to eat on yard duty then a drive to the city for a meeting of IT teachers at the ICTEV where we will be planning some exciting professional development and conference activities. We also tried out some innovative ideas for online meetings using Elluminate and Google Hangouts. All of what happens in the busy life of an Australian school teacher.

Just another Wednesday
Feb 29th 2012 is a Wednesday, usually I would be working on a Wednesday (I only work 3 days a week) and sure enough I was working today in my office in central London near City Hall. It was a quiet day with quite a few people absent and few emails to deal with. For lunch I had ‘the usual’.
Wednesday night is ‘choir practice night’ so this evening I was practising along with about 30 others, for our concert on March 24th, Rossini, Verdi and Handel – looking forward to it.

Feet not touching the floor – again
The thing about not having a job (being unemployed) is that I really thought I might be bored, or may be I would get chance to read or write, may be even watch a bit of day time TV in between a frantic search for work. It’s not really planned out that way and though I haven’t totally given up on someone employing me I’m seeing working for myself as a much more attractive option. There’s a lot of ageism out there and though I’m not old … I’m old enough for people to feel like they wouldn’t be able to tell me what to do. It’s a problem but one I’m increasingly happy with.
So, today I woke at 6.00am. Years of an early morning commute means I’m still waking very early. I check the news and tweet the interesting bits, then it’s up, breakfast and driving my eldest to school.
The traffic is ridiculous and I have the usual thoughts about the fact it would only take 40 minutes to walk or if there was a bus that ran at sensible times … anyway, it’s my usual rant to myself.
Then home for vacuuming, washing up after breakfast, clean washing out of the washing machine, dirty washing in, stove cleaning (I never know what to do with the ash), coffee making for my work-at-home partner then it’s whizz out the door for a brisk walk to a friends house. I’m helping her with a tricky picture research – forty obscure images illustrating energy from the 19th Century. It was challenging but good to work the brain and help a friend. We got really engrossed, so much so that I forgot about taking my eldest to evensong, so ended up madly rushing out having made a good start but still having a way to go.
On the way back from choir I hooked by Sainsbury’s to get supper and milk. Fifty two pounds later and having resisted anything that even slightly looks like a treat I drove back home to make supper. We had chicken as a special treat for it being the 29th though eldest has given up meat so I replaced her chicken with mushrooms – not sure she was terribly impressed.
My evening has been spent working on a new business I’m hoping to set up. People I’ve run my idea by love it so spurred on I plan and work on the set up. It’s going to be great doing my own thing rather than working for people who know less than me but get paid more.
So, my day’s finishing with my very first blog post and a quick job search – got to look willing despite me hoping to go into business for myself.
I’m struck as my blog comes to an end how lucky we are in the UK. Some of the people in countries in the list ‘Where you are posting from?’ are having such a tough time at the moment. Things sometimes feel tough in the UK but really we are so lucky and we all need to appreciate it more.
Happy 29th fellow bloggers.

Summary
Attended a meeting this afternoon that was very frustrating. It was for Primary ICT Co-ordinators and too much of the meeting was given over to commercial suppliers offering their products. I’d have been happy with one at the start of the meeting and then had the time to get down to the nitty gritty of the day job and its issues. Ah well.
Had a dilemma over taking an afternoon’s work and missing a spot of grandson sitting, or raking in a few quid. Took the advice of my lovely daughter. I can see grandson at a whim, work less so. Friday pm with Y4 it is.
Got an email from the owner of a gite in France telling me that they’d taken a booking when I thought I’d had 7 days to confirm as I’d requested a booking form…. but I didn’t specify a reserve on the dates when I requested said form. Misunderstanding = several hours more web searching. Grrr.
Thought about my brother, who got married on Feb 29th 20 years ago. So is that his 20th or 5th he’s celebrating?
Another evening passes without me using the Wii EA Sports Active Fit. Good intentions and all that.
And so to bed!

Daffodils
February 29th is different because we only meet it every 4 years. But today is also Wednesday, and that’s not unusual at all. Today, as I do every Wednesday, I’ll work during the day, then go to my evening class later on. I work from home so I like to have things to do during the evening to get me out of the house sometimes. But right now this second, I’ve paused for a break to write this post, have a cup of tea, and smile at the daffodils bobbing their heads in the breeze in my front garden. Lovely!

29th February teacher in Dublin
Started the day talking to my form about the extra day in the year. they were most upset for those whose real birthdays only come once every four years. I was in class all morning. I had meetings with my colleagues, we discussed Literacy and Numeracy. Spent the afternoon preparing the library for World Book Day tomorrow, we are having a Book Fair and a Reading Assembly – students and teachers will read a passage from their favourite books. This evening I gave a course for Home Economics colleagues, we explored ways of improving our students’ literacy and numeracy skills while they are enjoying learning Home Economics. Now home having avoided the supporters form the Ireland v Czech Republic football match and the traffic chaos that ensues. All in all a very busy extra day in the year.

Just spent a great day listening to Trevor Hawes in MK. Lots of food for thought in challenging the way we teach, engage with pupils and more importantly engage with parents so as to improve the life chances of our most vulnerable children. Y4 had a very busy day today. It started at 8.50 this morning when the children came tumbling in. Some children work on Numeracy via I Am Learning while the rest work and discuss Numeracy problems. After that “Bill’s New Frock” was discussed and the children wrote the start of a version of “Gill’s New Trousers”.
Playtime followed, and I was on playground duty. It was a little different today because Sadie pinched my whistle so that I couldn’t blow for the end of playtime!
Chunking was the order of the day for Numeracy and although it can be a bit tricky Y4 were pretty successful.
Lunchtime came and went and although there was an incident or two to do with football (isn’t there always?) and then students from Deyes High School came to rehearse with Y4 for their upcoming dance performance.
Before all the children went home there was an assembly.
It was perhaps the loveliest day for weather this year in our small town just outside Liverpool but not as good a day as my visit to Wembley on Sunday to watch Liverpool win the Carling Cup Final.
One of our pupils became very famous at Wembley. He appeared on TV and has since had over one and a half million hits on Youtube http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/video-that-made-this-boy-famous
Y4′s blog is http://year4.greenparkschool.org.uk/

To comment or not to comment?
Today I have watched over 400 children in my school blog their hearts out, a first foray into this wonderful web tool for our school. I have read many posts since I got home and commented on blogs, still not having posted my own contribution to this global blog.
To be honest I have been thoroughly enjoying reading and commenting of everyone else’s contributions. I have found the variety of posts astonishing and and in awe of how truly global this activity can be.
I posted my first comment about 11.45pm last night. I was watching the blog and couldn’t help myself . So many thoughts and responses bubbled into my head. I commented on someone from Australia, from New Zealand, from South Africa and from Belgium, all before midnight.
The blogger in Belgium had posted in his native tongue. I really wanted to know what he had said so I copied and pasted his post into Babelfish . All became clear (Hitchhikers Guide to the galaxy came to mind) I formed an answer then retranslated in back into…Dutch! I do hope the gentleman could get the gist of my reply. I felt proud that I could do that.
So if you are not sure whether you can be bothered to comment on someone’s blog after reading it, I say DO IT! It feels so good and having had my first comments last week on a 100 word challenge for grown ups that I posted (my first attempt at blogging proper) I was thrilled and bowled over that someone had been kind enough to leave me a few words of encouragement.
It brings context to blogging .
Now think how that can help children with their writing.
Empowering, huh?

Part of it!
I’ve been reading about this blog on Twitter for weeks, don’t want to be left out, so I’m getting my act together now… better late than never. As always the 29th Feb started over the other side of the world first. My dad, who has gone ‘back home’ to see out the last of his days, will have experienced it first – right now they’ll be sleeping their way into March and forward to winter. It’s all back to front down under and a very long way away. So – even though you won’t read this Dad, I’m saying hello from my home to you – back after 50 years away, in yours. Lovely New Zealand, glad we’re connected….

World Book Day
Happily, frantically preparing to celebrate WBD at my school tomorrow. Am a librarian (qualified and chartered) who LOVES my job – and, especially, enthusing children (and their teachers) about the greatest books written in the whole history of the world! There is still so much LOVE for books – even those that don’t require batteries or an electricity supply. BOOKS ROCK!

Busy Day
I’ve been preparing for tomorrow’s Kumon session at my lovely Centre in Deepcut. I’m also thinking about my wedding in April and all the things I need to do to make that a special day for my fiance and all our friends and family.
I think this is a great project and it’s been brilliant to see all the comments.

This month…
Its been a truly amazing month culminating in this last day being one where I can celebrate many nuggets of joy. Firstly, I reconnected with my sister after 25 years of not knowing where she was or how she’s doing; I’ve lost a stone and a half after changing my diet and exercising every – well, maybe not every, but most days! My nephew sprung a surprise wedding on the family – good news, as that willl make it two family weddings this year. Always good to catch up with family at these events. Finally, the sun has been shining more often, bringing better weather, lighter, brighter mornings and evenings, and the promise of many more days outside. I love the 29th February!

Somerset house
Walking across the river to King’s College, then walking back through Somerset House to Waterloo never ever fails to lift me. Beautiful place. Timeless. A link to the past and an inspiration to study, work that little bit harder, stretch oneself a bit further. How can a building do that? My favourite courtyard and possibly my favourite place in London. That’s all.

Looking forward to some Pi
I had a good leap day today which started with the announcement that the Raspberry Pi is now available. What is it? Well it’s a computer that costs just over £22. It’s pretty powerful, you can browse the web, watch HD video and more importantly use it to learn how a computer works and to learn programming. Soon it will be available to all UK schools and worldwide. What’s the catch? Well you have to provide a screen but it will plug into a TV, you’d also need a keyboard and mouse but they’re only a few pounds. I’m really excited about this project and I think it will really help more young people get interested in learning to write computer programs.
So after a busy day at work I went online to order one but there had been so much interest the suppliers website had crashed. However you can leave your name and email and I hope to hear soon that I can have a Pi, a whole one all to myself! Want to know more? http://www.raspberrypi.org/

Playing away from home
Posted in the US, but from folks in the UK, here are contributions from people at school.
Miss Atkins posted in the “29 people I admire” section
“I admire the 28 girls currently in Y3 who work so hard and make coming to school a real joy, and the 29th individual is Miss Throssell – my parallel Y3 teacher with whom it is a pleasure to work.”
And Miss Throssell replied “I admire Miss Atkins very much! She is super organised and always ten steps ahead!”
Mutual respect. Marvellous!

Certainly not the ‘usual day at the office!’ At the California Academy of Sciences to deliver a pitch in the DML Badges for Lifelong Learning Competition – which I’ve now done. My collaborator providing the technical expertise was Richard Wyles of Totara LMS Solutions from Wellington, New Zealand. So a Brit with a Kiwi in the US talking about accrediting lifelong learning – spanning time and space perhaps?
A February 29th to remember definitely!

Chicago Bookstores: Hyde Park
I just wrote a post for my blog www.annettegendler.com, about all the cool bookstores in my neighborhood in Chicago. There are about 10,000 writers coming into town for a conference, and sadly, downtown Chicago does not feature a big bookstore anymore since Borders went out of business. So I wrote up directions on where you can still spend hours browsing bookstalls and getting inspired.

Teaching and Living
Not a very exciting day – it started out with a great red sunrise which if we know the old fishermans rhyme -
“Red Sky in the Morning, Sailors take warning – Red Sky at Night, Sailors delight”. Well, the school day has ended with rain, and a few snow showers mixed in. Tough after two great days around 60 degrees F.
Spent the day teaching – students finishing up wonderful sewing projects, taking final review and cleaning. Tomorrow we begin learning Nutrition and Kitchen Skills. Always a highlight of my teaching experience.
So now I get to leave school and begin my “super commute” Yesterday I heard that people who travel at least one hour a day to their job are considered “super commuters” I have always wanted to be a “super Hero” I wonder what color my cape should be!
Maybe I’ll get back on later to fill you in on the ride through the rain!

Interdependence
Today I taught a lesson on Interdependence and we explored all the things that connect us to the rest of the world. Our books came from Ireland, some of our pencil cases came from Korea, our pens from France, we had some lip gloss made in Spain, school bags made in China, highlighters made in Japan. The list could go on and on (that’s their homework – to add to the list of connections!)
Exploring all these things made us realise how much we are connected to the rest of the world and really how small the world is.
Then I told my students about the Feb29th.net project. If they add their stories tonight to the blog they will be connecting even more to the world around them!
Great teaching and learning opportunities arise all the time.

Bonus Day
A long day – recovering from getting the kitchen made over and the ceiling in the living room – also getting skimmed by a plasterer yesterday… Add to that only a couple of hours sleep – and you have a busy day. Teach – collect minibus – go to a slightly frustrating meeting – teach – get kit ready for team – drive to venue – enjoy company of colleague from rival school – relish quality grass lovingly looked after by Independent School groundstaff – take early goal – then end up losing 2-3… back to school – gather kit – resort Google calendar entry – muse about clash I should have seen but didn’t when asked – wonder why the other person couldn’t have looked it up themselves – home through heavy traffic – wife unhappy – washing machine doesn’t work – chips for tea – takeaway reflecting transitory nature of home situation – painting to be done when the ceiling dries out – meanwhile dog needs walking – work piles up (again) parents evening tomorrow night – where do the weeks go? England v Holland in background – stomach heavy – smoke from neighbours still a potential worry and issue – think better tomorrow – hate to think weekend soon… lol

Scary Moments
The Feb29th.net website is on our file server. We have never hosted a blog with so many potential visitors in such short a time. Our big fear was that despite all our best laid plans we simply wouldn’t have enough computer power to keep the website running. I’m writing this at 8:30 in the evening UK time and so far over 10,000 people have left blogposts on the site. As far as we can tell, no-one has had a problem posting, and fingers crossed it has all run smoothly, but I’d be a liar if I said we hadn’t had a few sleepless hours building up to this day. Creative Blogs will be heaving a big sigh of relief when the last timezone clicks into March 1st.

The end of the working day . . .
So, there we are. Another working day is coming to an end.
Gate duty wasn’t so bad.
Year 11 were really attentive; fielding probing questions; recalling facts; pulling together knowledge to attempt ever more tricky problems.
Visited at lunchtime by groups of students wanting to post on this blog.
Twilight for two hours after school on Numeracy Across the Curriculum was really first-class. Watching other faculties try out our prepared mathematical starters was great fun!
A 100-square jigsaw in Bengali; an ‘averages’ weather card sort for four cities around the world; calculating BMI; car journey to school using images from Google Earth; cookery weights and measures in very different units. Lots of questioning, logic and mathematical ideas were heard around the room.
Time to now finish off preparation for tomorrows’ lessons. Year 8 ICT using Census at School data, and Year 7 maths starting transformations.
Big sigh . . . . .
Plus, it’s Pay Day . . . yay!

Gifted writer
First of all I was finishing my motivation letter. I want to be employed. Then I made all the copies and wrote the adress on the envelope. Then I get showerd and washed my hair before I went to the ballet-hour. But my teacher wasn’t there. She has written a paper and matched it on the door: I’m ill. That was the first time in nearly ten years, that she doesn’t work. Normally she gives lessons, even when she feels not good or while in pain.
So I went strictly to the post with my letter. It was a sunny day. At 7:45 I made a picture of the blue and red sky and posted it on facebook. I saw a formation of birds coming back from the south. Just beautiful! My facebook friends liked and commented it.
I went to the store to buy food and orange juice for the family. Then I came home and spent some time on facebook and my sister called me before she went to the cortège of Basel. I told her that these year I don’t come to watch and I felt a bit sad. Last year I was there with my daughter, she was 13 years then. Now she had to work for the school.
Then I startet cooking. I made something I never did before. Little cheese cakes, some of them I filled with muchroom and legume. My little daughter came home from school and we startet eating and we liked it!
Then came her father and my older daughter and we were sitting all together and talking. After eating, the adults had coffee and the whole familiy was eating a famous swiss chocolate with honey and reading the newspaper and the music channel on tv didn’t work anymore, because they had a technical changing day. My little daughter (12) was mad because of that. She loves music, especially Michael Jackson.
In the afternoon, I met a friend and we had a little walk. Then I went to the library. They had reserved a new book for me. I took one for my daughter too.
As I came back, I found that a woman wants to be friend with me on facebook. I accepted, she seemed familiar to me. Then I asked her and she answered and wrote these words: you are a gifted writer. We had been pregnand at the same time with our first kids! And I startet writing with her and now we know that our younger children will go at the same school in summer, maybe in the same class, that whoud be nice, but it’s nearly impossible because of many, many students.
But one never knows! Such a fantastic day. She told me, that she allways reads my posting in the internet. It’s so beautiful to be connected even if we don’t know, who reads us all

A very wintery 29th of February
Today started out very cold and rainy and it marked the end of summer for those of us who live “Down Under” plus it meant that we were in a leap year cycle! The students were all excited because they had a swimming lesson at 10am and the rain hadn’t stopped. We talked about being brave enough to ignore the cold and to get into the ‘swimming’ groove!
Most students had a great time being in the pool while it rained but a couple brought along their books to read.
Back in the class, we talked about this blog and the students were very interested, as they are learning how to be confident users of the internet. We haven’t started class blogs yet but I can see great potential in using this means of communication.
This post has been an excellent idea and the students were fascinated by the 29th of February and the concept of a leap year. Most of my students were 4 last leap year and now, at 8, they can understand the whole extra day business.
We will look at class blogs during the year.

Writing and waiting
Two screens in front of me. I’m typing on the smaller one, preparing to start my working day. The larger one is on, but not yet in use, displaying a picture of a purple galaxy spiralling away before me. As I finish this post, I’ll move to that screen, and start populating it with work in progress, articles I am reading, reference tools, pictures and diagrams.
I’m building forwards and backwards to deadlines – backwards to a missed deadline, now extended – and forwards to a deadline that still lies ahead. In order to meet those deadlines I need to write – and in order to write I need to read, and to distill what I read in order to build new knowledge.
And while I do that, two of my children are preparing to return from an exchange trip to Germany. At the moment, they’re in school over there, playing an England v Germany football match that ends their week’s stay. Then they’ll head for the airport and for home, and I’ll see them once again.

An Extra Day of Being
I am sitting in our little home near Delhi, India, contemplating this strange day that gifts itself to us just once every four years. Even as a child, the mystical quality of this day couldn’t be denied. It’s too out-of-the-ordinary. So on a mystical special day such as this, I’m immersing myself in mystical special thoughts. I am taking this day to think about what a gift it is to be.
To be.
I am.
Now nothing separates me from you on this mystical special day!

Four Years Here
Four years ago today I bought my house. It was a cold day and I can still remember the excitement of getting the keys and opening “my” front door for the first time. I put the gas fire on in the lounge and sat on the floor watching the flames. Then I walked doen the garden and investigated the shed and what things had been left in it. Today I will look back at some of the changes I’ve made to the house since then, but I will also be very thankful that I have such a lovely house, bought on a special day!

Me? Blogging? Never!
It is not that I am adverse to progress…It is more that I can’t keep up with it! In my household you can often hear shouts of, “Mum, you’re such a techophobe!” How true that is. I have the lates smart phone, but only really know how to do the basics. But it does look good in the pink case! I can hear the groans around the globe! So, I am ‘blogging’ today in an attempt to join the rest of you who are not so inept!!! Who knows where I might go from here…!

End of summer
Here in New Zealand the 29th of February also marks the end of summer. There are blackberries ripening in my garden, and each day I can go out and pick some juicy black ones. I have seen the first of the colourful autumn leaves appearing on the ground. It’s a but odd though, because in six weeks time I am leaving home to fly to Paris- and I will be jumping straight into spring!

Now I know what to say!
I really wanted to participate today, despite not really blogging at all myself. Whilst racking my brains for what to say, I read an evaluation visit note from one of the schools we have been working with on a project. We have been focusing on raising standards of literacy with the most disadvantaged pupils in schools here in Devon.
The evaluation from one of the schools had the following gems in:
-The introduction of blogs was very effective in motivating pupils to write and to edit their work
-Pupils became more confident about editing their writing using ICT.
-The writing on pupils’ blogs became more complex and longer during the period of the project.
• Pupils’ attitudes
-The use of individual pupils’ blogs gave them a sense of ownership and responsibility for what was on their blog.
-Pupils have greater enthusiasm for writing.
-Pupils have developed a greater sense of audience and see the purpose of redrafting.
-Discussion with pupils involved in the project during this visit showed that they are keen to write about what they are learning and what they have been doing on their blogs.
-Pupils showed that they understand the purpose of editing their writing. They talked about how they read through and edit their writing to make sure it made sense.
Can’t get better than that I say! What a brilliant way to celebrate the extra day…

Mrs Dover Year 3 Group Leader and Maths coordinator
I have just had a fabulous maths lesson with a year 3 class about divisbility rules and we used what we discovered about identifying multiples of 4 to create a list of years to avoid if you were superstitious about getting married in a leap year. As if! The children were also fascinated by the idea that someone born on 29.02.80 is now 32 but only 8, the same age as themselves, in Leap Years.

BIKI
Why does the sunflower core know that it should grow up once to a sunflower and not become a tomato? It is about such thoughts today with the springlike BIKI. BIKI is called BIBLE BOX and means a child service on Wednesday for children between 3 to 10 years. Up to 40 children comes from our two churches (reformed and Catholic), but also from free churches or from parental homes in which the parents never go or seldom to a church. Thus we can sow in child hearts and I am glad in this springlike, warm Swiss 29th of February particularly about it.

Isn’t technology wonderful
Today I am making sure that a group of 16 year-old students are able to do part of their english exams using the computer. Most of them are ill and can’t be at school but can still do their work on-line. They should all be able to take their GCSEs and hopefully go on to further education or work afterwards.
What would have happened to these youngsters before computers I wonder……. Isn’t technology wonderful!

Dissolving and Melting
We had a busy afternoon making chocolate crackles with our Newmarket School, Auckland children. This science lesson was with our 6 and 7 year old children. The children have been learning the difference between dissolving and melting. Straight after they had conducted their experiment the children left to go on their overnight camp at the Auckland Zoo. By the time they left, their experiment had solidified and so was eaten before they boarded the bus.

strange weather this year
today I’m waiting for the very first really big snowstorm of the year to reach us. It’s been a very weird year, weather wise. We had the hurricanes and all the flooding and then almost no snow and warm weather for the winter. All the resorts are hurting. Especially the small towns that run their own ski hills. Lake George in Upstate NY never froze over this year, neither did the Great Lakes. That is VERY unusual.
I am looking forward to spring already. The rat of a groundhog gets dragged out every year to see his shadow. I think he lies, which I wouldn’t blame him if I got dragged out of a nice warm bed just to face TV cameras and a lot of crazy people.
I wonder what the rest of the year will bring. All I know is that Jumpin Jacks… my local burger joint opens in less than a month!!!!

Hello Leaplings!
Hi
I am Jan and am 50 years old and have 2 wonderful grandchildren and lots of pets. I have been teaching languages for 27 years. Our A Level groups are having a great time and making films, writing songs and the course is very creative. I am very disappointed that at a time when we need languages most, pupils and parents do not see the value of them. In years to come pupils are going to miss out on jobs, universities etc because they didn’t take the opportunity when they could. FOOTBALL: hoping England do well tonight and praying QPR don’t get relegated! Enjoy the 29th!!

just another day?
About to start another day as a teacher at Goldington Academy in Bedford. The 29th of February is really just another day but with this blog it has become very special. It is an opportunity for my pupils to open a window on the world. To compare and contrast their lives with those from around the world. As they journey to school today they do not realise the opportunity they have to view the world through the eyes of others. Continents apart separated by mighty oceans yet linked today in a vision by words and technology. This is a unique opportunity i hope they will grasp with both hands. I shall find out as the day goes on.
Hello world this is “Goldington Academy”
