Year 6 explanations
After that, we have the opportunity to go down to the dinning hall for toast club, if you wish. It lasts for 10 minutes, you can sit with your friends from other classes and it doesn’t cost anything. Toast club helps you focus in the next lesson because you have a later dinner so you don’t get hungry later in the lesson.
Before lunch you can go outside for 10 minutes for a break where you can play with your friends or sit around in the gazebo. You need a break so that you are ready for the next lesson and so you don’t have to rush around.
After lunch you are ready for your first booster classes. You have the choice of time, times table, protractors, calculators and calculations. If you find this work hard, teachers come and help you. At half past one, you change for your second booster class for another half an hour. You have the same choices as last time, but you can’t choose the one you’ve already been to. Because of these booster classes, this will help you achieve your target of level 4 in your maths.
At 2 o’clock, after your booster lessons, you will have a rest from learning by doing such fun activities as: art, volunteering (in the office, foundation stage or Year 3), ICT, outdoor or cooking. You are put into groups of 15 but still you are with some of your friends. If you have broken one of the school rules or core values, you will miss 10 minutes of your activity.
Year 6 is a fun year, there’s no need to be dreading it, however you do have to work hard and persevere. Good luck!

As Time Goes By…..
29 Years have passed me by,
Time rolls on and so do I,
Loved and lost and loved again,
Lots has changed since I was 10!
Computers, TVs, Mobile Phones,
Solar panels on our homes!
Many changes still to come
And…
I’m looking forward to every one!

Flamborough School Mum to Flo and Eliza
I think on a leap year the 29th February should be a holiday from work/school and we all have to do something we don’t usually do – however silly – the men/boys have to dress up as ladies and the ladies have to wear long beards/moustaches. We all have to go to the beach and play the game ‘Sheep and Tide’ – To play the game you spread the sheep along the beach and tie them to stakes, then balance teacups and saucers on their backs and wait for the tide to come in. Sheep are very good at detecting the tide !! the first sheep to drop her cups and saucers is the winner and receives a grand prize!! – (this is an idea from a Peter Greenaway film in case you wondered!)

Blogging on that extra day
To find the time to blog i need an extra day, then i can write, and think, and think about what i am writing about and then press submit and share it with the world.
I love blogging, I love reading the posts that the children we work with at MakeBelieve Arts have written. I love how blogging has captured their imaginations, and in doing so it has captured ours as adults. I now schedule time to blog inmy diary and feel guilty if i dont achieve it.
If only there was an extra day every month, then my blogging would be prolific.

Today!!
Hi, I’m 38 and a Deputy Head teacher in Surrey. I’ve had a busy day at work supporting colleagues, teaching children (yr2, art today) and lots of organising. I really love my job and couldn’t think of another profession I would gain so much from. I have a great supportive family, so was able to come home to dinner cooking and a huge cuddle from my 9 year old son. We just played WII Party and I won the board game – Hooray!!!

Get out!
The weather in South Devon is stunning today. It feels more like June than February. I worked for a few hours, before deciding that enough was enough. I packed my rucksack, put on my shorts and headed out onto Dartmoor. I ran the 4 miles up to the top of Western Beacon where the view would have been stunning if it hadn’t been so hazy. As it was I paused briefly, absorbed the scenery and atmosphere, before doing the next mile or so which is all downhill and off-road, great fun. I finished at the gym for 30 minutes of weights and a 10 minute cool down on the exercise bike. I’m now sat back in my office at my desk and am “working.” I think it’s time for a cuppa….

Its quite cold in Shimla, India. Chill in the wind is making Scotch taste better, esp. with warm water.

Decisions, decisions…
Well, today is about a number of REALLY unusual decsisions that have to be made. Some are really easy to sort out – others will not be so simple and may cause a little bit of a stir! BUT, they still have to be made and part of being a grown up is having to deal with things and not running away. However, nobody says you have to actually BE a grown up all the time…maybe I could ignore the hard decisions…
Hmmmm to sum up, I don’t like making decsions and I wish someone else would do it for me! What a day!

Press day in the newsroom
Today is – so far – the most peaceful day I’ve had this year working as a journalist at the Times Educational Supplement (TES) magazine in London. That’s weird as Wednesday is our weekly press-day, and the other reporters are busy trying to make sure we’ve got the latest news before we go to press this evening. Some are on the phone now, interviewing people and scrawling down notes in short-hand.
But my work for this week’s issue is done – I hope – and for the first time in a few months I feel like I’m not running late for a deadline on an article, or for sending across pages for the mini-magazine I edit (I mentioned this project and @DeputyMitchell’s great work on blogging in it recently: http://ow.ly/9m4zH). So I’ve had an opportunity to clear the huge mess of paper proofs off my desk and actually do some planning for upcoming issues, coming up with ideas for articles I’d like people to write for me about education.
This morning a colleague handed me a copy of a new book about the Flat Classroom movement, one of the approaches to linking schools via the internet. The book’s now under some coffee cups on my desk. Perhaps we should run something about that movement – or at least broader ways schools are now connecting globally? Then I check on this site, and see all the contributions pouring in from all over the world and think “Yeah – there’s something in that…”
Just as I typed that one of the sub-editors came over with a pile of proofs to check and correct for next week’s issue. Oops. Better get back to work.

Cooking at the Langley’s
I was taught this recipe whilst attending Rick Stein’s seafood school in Padstow on the 29th July. It is FAB!
Serves:- 4
Preparation Time:- 30 minutes
Cooking Time:- 30 minutes
Ingredients:-
1 x 100g leek, cleaned
100g butter
1 rasher of smoked back bacon, cut into thin strips
1 teaspoon chopped mint
175ml Beaujolais
50ml Port
300ml fish stock
1/4 teaspoon caster sugar
4 x 75g unskinned plaice fillets
Sprigs of mint, to garnish
Salt and pepper
Preparation:-
1. Cut the leek in half lengthways and once more into quarters if it is quite large. Cut across these strips into 1cm pieces. Bring a small pan of salted water to the boil, add the leek and simmer for a few minutes until tender but still al dente. Drain well.
2. Melt 15g of the butter in a small pan, add the bacon and leeks and cook gently until all the excess water has evaporated. Stir in the mint and season with some salt and pepper. Set aside and keep warm.
3. Pre-heat the grill to high. Put the Beaujolais, port, fish stock and sugar into a large pan and boil rapidly until reduced by three-quarters.
4. Melt another 15g of the butter and brush over both sides of each plaice fillet. Season with salt and pepper and lay them skin side up on the lightly oiled baking tray. Grill for 2 minutes.
5. Dice the remaining butter. Bring the reduced wine and stock back up to the boil and then whisk in the butter, a few small pieces at a time. Adjust the seasoning if necessary.
6. To serve, spoon the leeks on to 4 warmed plates. Put the plaice fillets on top and pour the sauce around. Garnish with sprigs of mint.

Take a leap of faith
Today’s a leap day, the 29th of February
Only comes round every four years
It’s an extra day, a give away day
So surely it’s something to cheer
To celebrate and make the most of
To mark with a special occasion
It’s an extra day, a give away day
So come on and make a decision
Plan what to do, have something to say
Make a commitment to your future
It’s an extra day, a give away day
Believe you can do something super
Perhaps this is the day to make the choice
To take that leap of faith
It’s an extra day, a give away day
Say yes and stop being a slave

Y6 Explanations
The last one of the 100 word explanations:
Have you ever worried about been in y6? Well the worrying stops now! Here are some explanations on how y6 works.
Firstly, you come in to school and we have maths test in your maths groups to get ready for SATs.
Next, we do literacy before going to reading groups. After we have two booster groups until 2:00 then we have project time: cooking, art, volunteering, outdoor, sports then its assembly. After that its home time where we wait for our parents.
Hope you understand y6 better now and don’t be worried to comment on my post and ask questions.

Blogging day on Leap Day!
Well, I would love to say that I have been doing something phenomenal today but in reality, it has just been another normal day. I went to work, spent the day leaping around my classroom telling my students “happy leap year” in Spanish and teaching a unit on food and healthy living. (Every other day in class I still leap around but I generally do not shout happy leap year as I do it) So as I stated…another normal day.
Well, feliz Año Bisiesto to you all! I hope you also spend your day leaping!

29 Reasons Why I Teach
I am in my 14th year of teaching. Since beginning my career I have taught in four different schools, seven different grade levels, and two different contents. I am currently teaching Family and Consumer Sciences and twelfth grade English. I’m not sure if I got into education for the same reasons, but today, Februaray 29, 2012 I have 29 reasons for teaching. Here they are:
1. The kids
2. The content
3. Because I truly love the kids
4. Because I truly love the content
5. Because I whole-heartedly believe that I can be a positive influence in someone’s life
6. Because I may be the only person to say “hello” or “how’s your day going?”
7. Because I may have different expectations than the students’ parents therefore exposing them to different views
8. Because I believe that what I teach is sometimes not as important as how I teach it
9. Because I value education
10. Because I want to show my own two children how much I value education
11. Because I do enjoy summertime:)
12. Because I like connecting with students and learning more about them every day
13. Because I know I can’t change the world, but I may be able to change a person
14. Because I think every student should love literature, writing, and baking as much as me
15. Because my students make me laugh every day
16. Because my students make me cry more than I wish
17. Because my family is a family of teachers
18. Because it’s a necessary profession
19. Because it’s what I feel I was made to do
20. Because I’ve considered doing other things but always come back to teaching
21. Because I see how much I’ve grown as a teacher in the past 14 years and am willing to keep growing
22. Because I didn’t want to a child psychologist afterall
23. Because can give rewards and fun prizes
24. Because I get rewarded every day by they’re smiles and charm
25. Because I don’t mind smelling like fried food at the end of the day
26. Because I fell in love with Scout and Jem
27. Because I get to watch kids grow into young adults
28. Because I love the content
29. Because I love the kids.

Leap Day Snow Day
I planned to have my students participate from school; however, we have a snow day here in Minnesota! I’m sitting on my couch enjoying a cup of coffee as I grade student journals. I hear the sound of snow blowers and plows clearing away the mess that is outside. The best sound, though, it the shouts and yells from the kids playing. We haven’t had any appreciable snow all winter. It’s kind of appropriate that we get the biggest snow of the season on February 29th!

I’ve been dreading this day for weeks!
I have spent the last few weeks in dread of the arrival of this day, 29th February, 2012. At the age of 37, I have been to have my first ever filling at the dentist’s this afternoon. My dad tells me that I must have inherited his hard enamel……..
The numbness has now worn off, I’ve eaten my next meal (sumptuously soft shepherds pie, just to be on the safe side) and I’m about to brave having a (not too hot) cup of tea.

Is today different?
I am sitting in a computer lab with 18 second graders. This is the second time that I am adding to this blog. The first time I did a class post with a first grade class. Now I am doing my own post as the children write about Leap Day. They prepped yesterday so that they would have something to write. We started by talking about blogs and looking at our school blog. I’m so happy that I had this opportunity to introduce blogs to the class with a real opportunity for the students to publish. In our school, we thing that it is so important for students to understand online publishing and participate in it.

Taken for granted
I have finally finished setting up a new home computer, nothing special in itself but, it works; which is a lot more than can be said for the redundant box that now sits in the cupboard. Spare parts perhaps? The computer is not special, the feelings I have towards it tend to be ones of frustration but, what it enables is so amazing. I use my computer for learning in a way I never imagined when I was at school. Now my learning extends beyond the formal boundaries of the institution where I continue my formal education. My personal learning network spreads around the globe, and yet this computer has also been the key to my participation at local conferences and seminars where I have met some great people. Today I was up just before 6am to see if I might be able to buy a Raspberry Pi (alas not). I imagine (hope); this name will be far more common in by the next leap year blog, especially in schools. A lot of people seemed to feel that is pretty special computer, maybe mine is too. I wonder, what will be special in four years’ time?

Good luck!

Fed up being the scape-goat
I’ve been in work for 14 1/2 hrs preparing for an Ofsted visit to check how well our Academy is serving the needs of our students. I usually start work at 6.30am and leave school at 6pm each day to try and make sure I do my absolute best for my students. I also give up some of my weekend to the detriment of my young children.
I appreciate that I am not the only teacher who does this, and there are those who even do more. I know that I have a serious responsibilty in preparing my students to be productive members of our societies and community, and to help them achieve their aspirations. I do this gladly as I chose to be a teacher.
However, I object to the fact that education is used as the scape goat for all of society’s ills. I am annoyed when they announce on the news that apparently schools are “now going to teach …..” when we’ve already been doing that. Where are the responsibilities of the Parent’s and local communities to also teach their youth how to be good citizens. There needs to be a triangulation of support for young people so that we can support the Parents , and they can support us.
However my biggest objection is when Mr Michael Gove, our current edication secretary, dares to claim that
1. I am a danger to the educational well-being of ict students as I only teach them the national curriculum and not how to programme a computer. This is when we don’t even have enough money to buy new ict resources so we can deliver the exciting and progressive topics that I would love to deliver.
2. Apparently I only work 32 1/2 hrs a week and have long holidays. Gove thinks I should actually work long enough to get the job done. Dear Mr Gove, please could you give my academy some more money so we can afford to employmore people and I don’t have to do 3 people’s jobs so I can ensure the student’s don’t suffer.
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to Blog. I hope I can now persuade our local LEA to release the block on Blogs so that I can demonstrate this in school.

100 Word Challenge
Here is another super piece of writing, this time from Anisa
Lucy stood gazing out at the stars being born in clusters and the moon shining as bright as possible. As Lucy was getting in to bed she thought about the day ahead of her but nothing came to her mind so she just went to sleep. But then suddenly she remebered that it was leap year……… ” Oh no! I forgot it was leap year!” gasped Lucy sitting up in her bed. ”I need to prepair, I need some clean clothes, I need some skills I need everything!” shouted Lucy trying to catch her breath again. What am I going to do? I have not prepaired for Leap year………!
Thanks for taking the time to read.

100 Word Challenge
Here is Jessica’s 100WC from my class. She is on the 100WC showcase. I am so proud. My class love the 100WC.
“Woof, woof!” from the curious cows floating elegantly from the sky, their delicate wings carrying them to the luscious field. Mooing furiously, Fluff the terrier, made me look up above at what had annoyed him. Quickly I spun around and all I see was swaying udders. Fluff and I sprinted for our little lives. Glancing back to see they were following us spraying milk trying to get our attention. We stumbled into a puddle of milk, that the gold and green cows had left. Finally the horrendously ugly, cows caught us.The good cow reminded me it was my mums Birthday. Oh dear I forgot it was a leap year!

Oh the joys…
Having spent the day teaching my fantastic class of 30 children (aged 7-9), I have also returned to school and done my 2nd Parents’ Evening of the week….a very long day, for this extra day….
My son (aged 9) thinks we have time in the next 4 years to petition our government to let us have the next Leap Day off!!! Could have a point.

Connecting people – virtually
My day has involved travelling to London to talk about how social networks are connecting us. It is like a huge conversation that anyone can join in. I work with the police and so being able to talk to people, particularly when they may need help, is critical. When we have good ideas we can share them, when we have problems we can share them. In 2012 there is no reason to feel alone or isolated.
The most important thing is that we take our virtual conversations into the real world. I have been discussing that with lots of other people today and we did it face to face. I met some interesting new people that I will now be able to keep in touch with through social networks. Let us use the new tools wisely.

Bigger Bible Conversations
For second year running, I’m looking after “The Big Read 2012″ (http://bigbible.org.uk/big-read/bigread12/) – getting people confident in reading and talking about the Bible – without being Bible bashers! It’s great fun, and conversation is happening – slowly… lots of improvements on last year, and over the past few days! Meantime, have a LOVELY view out onto the street on a rather grey day! Looking forward to a good sleep tonight!

Y6 explanations
Another 100 words explaining what happens in Y6.
Y6 works a bit different then everyone else. Here is an explanation about them.
They then go to maths to do a maths test to get ready for SATS. They work with all the teachers because different teachers are better at different things.
They have their dinner with the teachers, so no bullying happens.
They then go to boosters. Also they have great activities after boosters, different one every day so that the y6s don’t complain and they can do something fun.
If you work hard, you will get a good grade and you could end up like our y6s.

Year 6 Explanations.
Another 100 words, exaclty, aboutwhat happens here in year 6.
Have you ever wondered how y6 works? Then look no further. I will explain.
After register, at 9:00, they go straight into their maths groups. We have different groups because it is easier for the teacher and they can work at your level.
Before lunch they have literacy. Some children go out in groups like read write inc, or booster groups because it would be also easer for the teachers.
At 2:00 they do a good activity like cooking, outdoor, art, ICT and why you may ask? They do it for a treat for working hard.
HOPE YOU LIKE IT!!!

A Book in a Day
The junior department in my school are completing a book in a day challenge each year group is being asked to write a paragraph then pass the story onto the next yeargroup. So far the story is looking good. Why not have a read below. and Enoy feb29th and national book week here in the UK.
Once upon a time there was a cat in the dark wood and he was running around scared. While he was running he saw a scary ghost,
it was tall, big and white like snow. The ghost howled at him. Charlie, the cat, remembered he was a secret agent and he had to be brave and strong. SO…
He began to run through the dark woodland towards what appeared to be a bubbling swamp. The smell was like rotten eggs and smelly socks with steam rising upwards.
Charlie lost his balance and fell head first holding his nose tightly. The swamp let him into a magical land. There was a huge silver fridge door, Charlie opened the door and to his suprise he could see the entrance to a laboratory. He recognised a voice coming from the next room, so he began to investigate, ” is anyone there” ? and suddendly a voice cried out “is that you Charlie? its me agent 006″ ……………….
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you 006. Does this mean we have another mystery to solve?”
“Yes,” explained 006. “I have just received a letter from our old friend Bob. He is in trouble and we have to rescue him! He has been kidnapped!”
Charlie replied, “Maybe it was the scary ghost I saw in the dark wood”
Charlie and 006 went over to the trackometer in the laboratory and typed in Bob’s name in code. Immediately, the machine told them where Bob was. He was in a haunted castle where the ghost lived. Charlie and 006 scooped up the trackometer, sat nav, first aid box (super pack), walkie talkies and tuna sandwiches for Charlie and egg mayonnaise sandwiches for 006 (his favourite). They jumped onto their firebolt 2000 and zoomed towards the haunted castle, excited and a little nervous….
The broomstick whizzed through the air, they zoomed so quickly that a trail of tuna sandwiches flew out from behind them. As they approached the haunted castle they saw great clouds of vampire bats circling above them. The walls of the castle were covered in a green, foul smelling slime. Charlie and 006 landed with a thump on the roof of the castle and began to slide awkwardly down onto the ledge, next to an open window.
Charlie and 006 climbed cautiously through the open window, but as they did so Charlie’s jumper caught on to the catch and the window closed behind them. How were they going to escape? In front of them lay a trap door, they opened the door and rolled down a flight of stairs, landing in a heap at the bottom. To the left of them they noticed a room. At the same time the trackometer started to beep. Charlie glanced at the machine and realised that Bob was very close to them. Charlie and 006 were acting bravely ,but feeling extremely anxious at the same time. They reached for the handle of the wooden door in front of them and ………..

100 words challenge for Grown ups – …….take a leap of faith…..
They had discussed plans for the future, but……
The whole downsize, relocate and travel plans were hanging there, flapping in the breeze, just not quite within reach, but why not? There was always, the excuses, a room needs to be decorated, or work is getting too busy to think of moving house, or there is too much sorting to be done now and what is the rush?
Then on the other hand, life is for living and you only live once, not to mention, let there be no regrets.
Sometimes, a leap of faith is all that is needed.

A reflective thought.
Leap Years are needed to keep our calenders in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions. If we did not have an extra day every four years we would loose 6 hours from our calendar every year, which means that after 100 years our calender would only be 24 days. Leap Years were invented by Julius Caesar over 2000 years ago and were reflected in the Julian Calendar. In 1752 Great Britain changed and adopted The Gregorian Calender
I am sometimes in amazement of the things that just are. As a genealogist I am aware of the Calendar changes and often ponder on the wider implications things such as this, impacted onto the life’s of my ancestors.
We live in a modern, technological advancing world. A teacher friend, once told me that in order to teach her subject, which happens to be French, she had to first teach several of the students how to tell the time. I was amazed. When I asked why, she replied that the children had learnt to tell the time using digital displays rather than a traditional clock. That issue had never occurred to me.
We present to the future, a generation of children who regularly use computers, Playstations, iPhone and iPods, and much more. Basics things can become forgotten, and technological advancements are seen as the norm and perhaps taken for granted.
The eldest family member I can remember is my Great Grandmother who was born in 1898. She died in 1973 and left a world that had experienced Wars during her lifetime, The Great War, The Second World War, The Boer War, Korea and Vietnam. She had known poverty, fear, worry and grief. During her lifetime she had buried her husband, three infant children and three of her nine adult children. Times were hard and to us, in this modern age perhaps incomprehensible. What would she has made of the world now?
The issues she felt in the United Kingdom are still in existence now in parts of the world. Parts of Africa and the Middle East torn apart by War, famine, and disaster. In many ways, the fact that these things still plague families is tragic.
I was therefore delighted last year to become part of a group called Genealogists for Families (http://genfamilies.blogspot.com/). The group is two fold. It brings together like-minded genealogists, across the globe who share a common interest and passion for their families.
Genealogists for Families supports a team which is part of the Kiva Organisation. Whereby, those who choose to, can loan $25 to a specific individual of your choice. The $25 is a loan not a hand out. It is repaid in monthly instalments and allows those registered at the Kiva site to access to funds when there is not the facility to access traditional banks. Our contributions are not going to stop Wars, famines and alike, but it does enable us to be part of someones future.
I made my first loan before Christmas in memory of my Grandmother and have three more loans that I plan to arrange in the memory of two deceased special family members and to commemorate a special birthday of my Mum’s. I plan to continue this process through the course of the year. If you want to take part visit (http://www.kiva.org/team/genealogists)

29 Things to Do this year
I found out about Feb29th.net on the BBC news show ‘Click’ a few days ago and I rather wish I had found out about it earlier as I would love to have persuaded my oldest daughter’s school to take part. It is not just for schoolchildren, although the project was started by a headteacher of a primary school from Bolton in North Yorkshire who discovered that blogging improved his pupils writing scores enormously when he introduced the idea of blogging to them. You can read more about this here.
The idea of Feb29th.net is to record one special day across the globe with the site open from when the first country’s times zone enters Feb 29th to when the last one leaves it and it becomes ordinary old March 1st across the world. If you would like to join in simply write a blog post – long or short and load it into their form on Feb29th.net.
So on to my post. What am I going to write? Well I wasn’t too sure at first and then I thought about what was special to me this year – the answer is that I have had a big landmark birthday this year as anyone who reads my blog will already know (I know I’m banging on about it again!). This got me thinking and I decided that I would write about 29 things that I should do this year (easier than *ahem* 21!). Some of these things I know I am definitely going to do – others may be harder, although I have tried to be realistic (it’s not a bucket list!). Here goes – 29 things to do this year – before Feb 28th 2013.
1/ Get a job or start a business
2/ Go on a cruise
3/ Get an allotment
4/ Make some money out of my blog!
5/ Go to Britmums or Cybher or Blogcamp
6/ Stay in a yurt
7/ Sort out my wardrobe
8/ Read at least 12 books (I used to read loads but have got out of the habit)
9/ Make some real craft (as opposed to just the kids stuff!)
10/ Cycle around the local ranges with my eldest daughter
11/ Go to an exercise class regularly
12/ Have a big party for all the neighbours
13/ Go to a summer festival with the kids
14/ Learn a new skill or sport
15/ Decorate youngest daughter’s bedroom
16/ Do Race for Life (quicker than last year)
17/ Have a weekend away with my husband
18/ Go to an Olympic event
19/ Get my eldest daughter to write a blog post
20/ Sort out our garden and make it pretty again!
21/ Find a family activity we can all do together regularly
22/ Have a reunion with some of my old school friends
23/ Sell some stuff on Ebay
24/ Complete another section of the South Downs Way
25/ Take my youngest daughter on a bus
26/ Sell at a car boot sale
27/ Put up some more nest boxes for the wild birds
28/ Get my (21 year old’s!) check up at the doctors
29/ In summary – declutter, get organised, get fitter and spend more time with the family!
That was harder than I thought! I’ll let you know how I get on on my blog Rollercoaster Mum. In the meantime what things would you like to do this year?

Happiness is a choice!
Today, I’m working in my office, which is a novelty because I do so much travelling all over Brazil for work. I have a webinar this afternoon, where I know I’ll connect with amazing professionals and friends from my field. I will also be preparing a training session for teachers which I’ll deliver tomorrow and Saturday in the beautiful city of Salvador, in Northeast Brazil.
Today, I received some amazing news really early.. that made me incredibly happy! It dawned on me that if only people would CHOOSE happiness over despair, then the world would be a better place.
I hope this simple message will inspire some people who read this mini blog on 29thFeb… to choose happiness and allow the light of love to flow into their lives today.

Teaching in England
Hello, I am a teacher in a wonderful school in Dorset (SW England) where I teach a fabulous class of year 4 and 5 children. Our class is called Ash class.
This week we are busy enjoying our book week and have also started an exciting Jurassic project. The children are going to be writing stories set in Jurassic times- I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
Teaching is a fabulous job which is extremely rewarding, hardwork and most of all fun! There’s always loads to do, but spending the day with a class of enthusiastic children who love learning, sharing their ideas and finding things out is great.
We have been planning our feb29th blog posts this morning and will be posting them this afternoon- the children have come up with all sorts of interesting ideas and lots of them are planning to share this site with their parents when they get home from school.
We have a class blog and enjoy sharing our work with other children from around the world.
We have been trying to predict how many people will visit this site today- a million is the highest guess!
Looking forward to seeing how many people visit the blog today and from how many countries.
What a fantastic way to bring the world together in one place for one day.

Looking forward to seeing how many people visit the blog today and from how many countries.
What a fantastic way to bring the world together in one place for one day.

Just an ordinary day . . .
Second post from me – greedy I know! My first was personal about my daughter’s birthday being today. This one is about me as a Headteacher and a bit about the day ahead.
Today I hvae been shwoing potential candidates around for a teaching post which we have advertised and closes tomorrow. I already have LOADS of applicaiton forms to read through which will be a challenge but at the same time will be exciting because I will appoint a new member of staff who will bring much to our team and join us as we strive to be the best we can be.
I’ve been into our Reception class to help them solve a burglary as it appears that the teacher’s chair and other items have gone missing. Two characters who match the description of Burglar Bill and his wife Burglar Betty were seen around school this morning! The children are now coming up with a plan to see if they can solve the ‘crime’.
I’m now going through applications for places in our Reception Class next September; trying to sort and rank them according to our criteria. It is humbling and encouraging that so many people have expressed a preference for a place at our school (up on last year) but also difficult because I know that many will be disappointed. As a parent myself I know the worry and concern that goes along with this.
As for this afternoon, I will be going with Y5 to visit the local library and hopefully encourage as many as posible to join. I will then be making an early departure today (about 4 o’clock) as I want to get home to celebrate my daughter’s 3rd (12th) birthday with her.
I can’t wait to read the archive of today and see what has been posted – hopefully some of the classes from my school might contribute too…..

Happy Birthday BBC World Service!
I’m celebrating two things today:
1. The 80th birthday of the BBC World Service. Its motto is ‘nation shall speak unto nation’ and at this time of great difficulties in the world I think it’s a timely reminder that we only find solutions from talking to each other.
2. A really successful IT Open Day that we held yesterday. A hundred people from all over the UK came to see us and what we do. In between lessons I’m putting all our presentations online, so that others might be able to benefit from what we’ve learnt.

I am at work, but am taking a quick break to join in this project. Unfortunately, the only halfway interesting/quirky thing I can think to post is that, according to comic books, it’s Superman’s birthday. And hey, I think that’s worth celebrating… Happy birthday Superman!

Happy to be back home
I have just come home to Perth after two weeks working away. I am sitting on my balcony looking at the river and the cars speeding down the freeway.
I have just been working in Alice Springs which is a town in the middle of Australia. It was very hot and dry there. I enjoyed a day trip to Uluru – it is the best rock I have ever seen!
I saw loads of lizards but no snakes (fortunately).

Seattle”s Leap Day 2012
On the February 29th, I ate simple, but yet delicious foods.
I ate a flavorful chili made by a friend, moist pumpkin bread made by my lovely niece, salty buttery popcorn prepared by PTSA parents at my school, and an amazing veggie burger and fresh fries from 5 Guys Burgers and Fries. For dessert, I enjoyed tasty coffee and mango sorbet from the fabulous Trader Joe’s.

A great day doing something different
On this special extra day, my class of year 4 children took the chance to do something different at school. They decided to spend five minutes asleep on their desks with their favourite teddy bears! The whole school did something different today, from takin the register backwards to reading on the gymanstic apparatus.
I really lucky to find out something exciting today, I will be spending two weeks in Slovakia in April finding out about how Computer skills are taught there to children. I hope to find some posts Here from children in Slovakia, but there are so many to look at I keep getting distracted!

my first ever blog
Sat at my desk at a pupil referral unit in Harrogate, UK writing my first ever blog post – hence uncertainty about what to write. So I’ll tell you about my school. We’ve got 36 pupils in Years 10 and 11 at the school. They come here because they do not attend a mainstream school. The press often describes schools like mine as a “sin bin” for naughty pupils but this is far from the case – everyone comes here for their own reasons and yes the majority are because of their behaviour. We are generally a happy school where pupils are taught in classes of up to 4 pupils and focus on English, Maths, Science, ICT and PSHCE together with a range of vocational options such as catering, hairdressing, motor mechanics or construction.

Today we are actually in Sydney, Australia. But we are usually in New Zealand running our Science Roadshow – Science in a Van.
And today is actually the 1st of March but I know that for many people using this blog – they are still enjoying the extra day of the year. Time differences around the world still amaze us. We are waking up and you are going to bed …
Today is special as we will be attending a good friend’s wedding. She has been praying for a good sunny day. We are involved in the service and it’s really exciting to be part of their new adventure together.
So today we woke up in our backpackers hostel, we soon will be picking up Alan’s suit and ironing Emily’s dress. Jump in a taxi and head off to the wedding. Maybe we’ll have a walk on the beach first????
Today is a good day!

5 ways to improve the teaching of mathematics
Today, I am sitting at my desk in Liverpool, putting the final touches to my presentation “Five key ways to improve the teaching of Mathematics”.
I will deliver it in Manchester tomorrow for Alan Peat LTD.
The five key ways are:
Using reasoning to support learning
Pupil talk and collaboration
Using models and images
Assessment through questioning
Decision making.
It will (hopefully) be a fun, practical session that will use simple resources and I.C.T. to to illustrate the points.
I’m really enjoying working as an independent consultant and
excited to working as part of Alan Peat’s team.

The art of “Now”
29 days into my new job on the other side of the planet! I just finished shopping for my new flat and am now on the way back home through the rush hour traffic that defines Kuala Lumpur at this time of the day in a cab! I am the luckiest man on the planet to be living my dreams! I’m in love with a woman who makes my words evaporate and even though it looks as though I will carry only a torch and not her heart, I am okay with it. I am hitting my stride professionally and personally. I am living the advice given to me back when I was desperately worried about turning 30 and not having done enough in my life to warrant a change in decades (silly me!)
“Be here now” It only happens once!

Y6 Explanations
They’ve done it!
Set the challenge an hour ago – explain what happens in year 6 in exaclty 100 words. Here are the results:
Here is an explanation on how y6 works. Hopefully you will understand it a bit better if you read it.
To start the day, all of the y6 pupils get spilt up into different groups because they are all working at different levels. Everyday at school they do a maths test to get them prepared for their sats. They don’t just work with one teacher they work with all different ones so that everyone can achieve their targets.
I know you will like it in y6 because of all the things they do to get them prepared for their sats.

Frustrations in the Classroom!
I am currently supposed to be teaching my Year 8 English class. We have abandoned the joys of comprehension exercises in favour of blogging. Pupils have brought in phones, iPads, laptops, blakberrys and iPads to enable them to take part today. Most have connected to the network but not yet all, hence just a little bit of frustration. Technology is wonderful. When it works.

Inspiring Children
Well, I tried to get others in my school to take part in this event today. I sent a link around a few weeks back to drum up some support and enthusiasm for it. I reminded everyone this morning that it was live today, but has anyone else actually had a go with their classes? No!
So, my class, as the sole representatives from our school, spent just over an hour looking at the what others had posted and the ideas for teachers at the top and decided to have a go.
Most of them wrote their own 29 favourite… list (although some of them struggled and got as far as 18 before changing the title!) This is fine as at least it gets them thinking and writing.
Others were a bit more creative in their ideas. One girl wrote a poem a bout 29 things. Another wrote about why she thought the number 29 was a good number. One of the boys wrote about himself in 29 words (although I haven’t found it on here yet, so not sure if it published properly). Another girl wrote about what she misses about her home country, Sweden.
I was impressed that they were all engaged in the activity and that some had a very clear idea of what they wanted to write.
Even my two boys who have very limited English managed to come up with some to blog about.
I like blogging and I have given plenty of opportunities for my class to discover the world of blogging.
Hopefully, they will see it as a way of communicating and sharing their thoughts and ideas, as well as developing their skills in writing , with a much wider audience than just within the school community.

Time For Bed
Unfortunately I woke up this morning at 4.30am. To make the oct of the time I went for a 10k run, so it feels like it has now been a very long day.
Eventually the morning at school started with an excellent sharing assembly by our Year 5/6 class Maple. Covering VCOP, drama, history and art, the children gave us a fun and informative look at what they had been covering over the last 8 weeks.
Afterwards it was time to meet with a fellow ‘new Headteacher’. One exciting job today was meeting with ‘Go Bonkers’ to plan a Jubilee Fun Day for the children. Hopefully we will be able to entertain 800 children at our school. Bouncy castles, inflatable assault courses and towering climbing walls: these are just some of the ways we will entertain them.
Tonight our Year 5/6 girls football team played at Upminster Park. Despite putting in a good performance, we lost. Apparently the longer out takes to get your first win, the sweeter it tastes once you achieve it. Despite the nature of the result, the girls enjoyed themselves and are now itching to play Parklands in March.
Now (at 11.24pm) it is time for bed and a fun day tomorrow dressed as Willy Wonka. I just hope the children can work out who I am.

Teaching Assistant
Today started off with getting my children out of bed – for once they were both awake and ready to face the day so that made things easier! Once we had all had breakfast, we got in the car and drove the 3.5 miles to school – my children both attend the same school where I work. The class that I work with had a swimming lesson at the local pool, so after registration we walked to the pool – about 1/2 hour walk on the way there – a bit longer on the way back! The children had a wonderful lesson – sadly one of the instructors was retiring today, so we all said a fond farewell to him. It was a lovely day and the walk back was beautiful – lots of new growth on the trees and great to finally hear some birds singing in the trees. Spring is well and truly on it’s way!
After lunch, I worked with a number of children giving them help with various areas. I love this part of my job – great to see the children making progress and grasping subjects they have not quite understood so far.
At the end of the day I was back on taxi duty – my daughter has a horse riding lesson on a Wednesday evening, so we have to make a mad dash from school to get to her lesson on time. I don’t know why but she was upset tonight – something the horse was doing / not doing! Anyway, eventually she got going and enjoyed the rest of the lesson. My son and I watched from the car – would have stayed by the edge of the arena but felt that since daughter was not having a good lesson, best to back off!
A quick visit home before we headed to McDonalds for tea – our one visit of the week and a rare night off from cooking for me! My husband came home early so we met him there and headed home.
Tomorrow is World Book day, so my children have been busy sorting out their costumes – my daughter is going to go dressed as Polyanna and my son is going as a character from the BeastQuest books. All the staff at work are going as Roald Dahl characters – I will be going as Matilda!
All in all, another busy day.

a day with my boy
On this day of leap years I was too ill to work, so I’ve had the privilege of spending it at home, once again witnessing the normally slow, but occasionally fast, yet always inexorable, progress of him from a newborn, an infant, to a little boy. I’m so blessed to have the opportunity to be his Daddy, something that was put into perspective last night when I read the heartbreaking personal blog of someone who I only know vaguely professionally through Twitter. Claudia, I’m in awe of you and your husband in the light of all that you’ve been through, it made even an hour with Reuben today, dulled by my fever and fatigue, all the more precious. I fervently hope that you get to experience some of that soon.

A year is a long time
This time last year there was no February 29th and I was struggling to cope with going out to the almost birthday celebrations of a good leap baby friend of mine. In fact I only stayed out for about half an hour.
A year down the line and I have a new job, new confidence and have put a lot of ghosts to rest that I hadn’t even realised were haunting me. I’ve learnt a lot with many amazing people beside me on my journey.
In the words of one of my favourite songs:
‘I can be anything I want with this hope to drive me onward
If I can just believe in me’ (Lin Marsh)
Happy Leap Day everyone!

Happy Quadrennium
I can’t remember what I was doing on February 29th four years ago, but thanks to this wonderful blogging project I’ll always be able to remember this one.
I teach English four days a week at a secondary school, and yesterday I remember walking into the staff room and thinking how lucky I am to be doing a rewarding job that I (mostly) enjoy, and to be living in probably the safest and most civilised period in human history in one of the most prosperous places on earth.
Really, I can’t believe my good fortune at times.
Then today, the special day of 29th February fell on my day off, so after a leisurely breakfast and a couple of espressos spent reading some of the earlier posts on this blog, I got changed into my cycling gear and set off on this ride: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/71847190
Turning those pedals through the near-deserted South Yorkshire countryside it felt so good to be alive.
I know that many people don’t have the blessings in life that I’ve got, and that makes me all the more determined to enjoy mine, and to try and share them in whatever small ways I can.

Head Teacher
February 29th 2012? My first Leap Year since discovering the world of blogging. Arriving in school this morning, knowing that I had a madly busy day ahead, I spent half an hour looking at the blogs that had been posted lasted night by the amazing staff and children at Ecton Brook Primary School. Reading what everyone has been up to always starts my day with a smile and immense pride in our school and the wonderful people in it. Having seen a few children, a few staff members and a few parents, my 9.00 ‘one hour’ meeting started and finished at 11! Two hours exceedingly well spent catching up with the wonderful work going on in our Children’s Centre and Pre-School, and planning for the summer term ahead. A brief time to catch up on emails brought some interesting information from the lawyers helping us to go through the Academy conversion process, and left me with another 4 hours work to do – it’ll have to wait until tomorrow. A cup of coffee, some children showing me their work, a phone call or two and a Skype onto our second site took me up to lunchtime, when a meeting with my Chair of Governors (bringing chocolate!) and briefing for the afternoon’s interview took place. The interview of a prospective NQT for September brought great potential and reminded me of the privilege of headship – watching superb teachers bringing out the potential in their children and changing lives for the better. A staff meeting until 5.00 followed by a meeting with my potential Academy Trust colleagues till 7.00 took me into the evening’s relaxation – a visit to the Derngate Theatre in Northampton to see the stupendous Stomp perform their dance/music routines. Wow. Talented individuals who obviously had amazing teachers who tapped into their potential and taught them ‘can do’ attitude. Home for 10.30, a glass of wine, another catch up on blogs, a posting on this amazing blog while we are still in Fed 29th, then a hot bath and bed. A typical day in the life of a Head Teacher!

Blogging is giving my class a global audience and a passion to write.

A milestone reached……
Fast approaching that certain age, I signed up for my first marathon which is in May. February 2011 I managed to run 14 miles in one month. Fast forward one year, and in February 2012 I reached the milestone of running 100 miles in a month. I should really use today as a last chance to squeeze some more miles in, but you know what? I am going to have a rest, drink some coffee and enjoy reading about what others are doing on this special day!

Hump Day
I am so glad that it is Wednesday, we will soon be over the hump of this week’s hill and sliding down to the weekend. Working is great, but relaxing over a weekend is so much better. And now that Spring is on it’s way, there is so much to look forward to and weekends take on a whole new meaning. Wednesdays always fill me with hope and excitement, even at the age of 37! Because I am that much closer to the weekend, to being with my wonderful husband and daughters and spending quality time doing what we love most. Thank goodness the 29th of February did not fall on a Monday!!

Today, I am doing 3 different things:
1 – Creating a veg plot in our garden – to plant potatoes, carrots, etc.

I don’t have much more to say – but I wanted to support David in this brilliant project!!!
When my kids get home from school – they are going to add a post too!!
Have a great extra day everyone : )

Proud of our Technology
Hello everyone.
I’m posting from Great Billing in Northamptonshire , England where we woke up this morning to a burst water main and no water. Today my car is being serviced so I am working from home this morning before going to Ecton Brook Primary School where I am Chair of Governors to interview a prospect teacher.
Our school loves technology and we use Macbooks , Ipads , Ipods , Laptops and loads of other exciting technology to help with our childrens learning. Have a look at our blogs at http://ectonbrookprimaryblogs.net/ .

Ode to 29th of Feb dot net
The 29th of Feb’s arrived
It only took four years
But something special’s happening
In all the hemispheres
Around the world, upon the web
Are bloggers logging on
To make their place in history
In this great blogathon
To speak a word, record their thoughts
And make their feelings known
‘bout any subject, take your pick
I’m sure you’re not alone
Ne’r has there been such wide appeal
For writing just for fun
On topics such as politics,
The arts or bubblegum
They blog about their favourite book
Or how to bake a cake
What cars are liked, what films are good
Or how to spot a fake
The blogging bug is spreading fast
And this idea’s sublime
The 29th of Feb dot net
See you in four years time

my first ever blog
Sat at my desk at a pupil referral unit in Harrogate, UK writing my first ever blog post – hence uncertainty about what to write. So I’ll tell you about my school. We’ve got 36 pupils in Years 10 and 11 at the school. They come here because they do not attend a mainstream school. The press often describes schools like mine as a “sin bin” for naughty pupils but this is far from the case – everyone comes here for their own reasons and yes the majority are because of their behaviour. We are generally a happy school where pupils are taught in classes of up to 4 pupils and focus on English, Maths, Science, ICT and PSHCE together with a range of vocational options such as catering, hairdressing, motor mechanics or construction.

my day
Today i had a cuddle in bed with my two wonderful children aged 5 and 3. Normally my 5 year old would have school but as she is just starting prep she gets Wednesday’s off. After a cuddle and a chat we got up and had breakfast, did a jigsaw puzzle and got in the car for a drive to get a couple of birthday presents for her friends parties on the weekend. After spending way too much money we returned home, watched some TV then off to dancing we went. Whilst my 3 year old and i were waiting for my 5 year old to finish her dance lessons, i noticed a huge lump inside my 3 year old’s ear, so off to the doctor we went. Finally after waiting for what seemed an eternity, back home cuddling in bed with my beautiful kids again whilst they fall asleep. All up a pretty good day!

Have set the challenge
Have just asked my group of Y6 pupils to explain, in 100 words, how things work in Year 6 in our school for a child in Year 5. They’ve got an hour to do this and then I’ll post some of them on the blog.

What happened to the snow?
Today I am sad because March has arrived and we didn’t even have a snow day off from school this year! We always get at least one day off (and sometimes many more) due to snow or ice. It is so much fun to wake up and find out that you can go back to bed. The day is yours to spend reading, watching TV, or playing in the snow. But March is here so winter is just about over. What happened to the snow this year? If you think I am a student, you are wrong. I am a teacher! Old Man Winter, I miss you!

I am blogging for the very first time. My husband tells me that I am Luddite for overlooking the significant benefits of blogging. I feel so much better now that I have conquered my demons and left my first post.

My friends 10th (40th) birthday today
Today I celebrated my friends 10th Birthday with her. Being 29th February she doesn’t get one very often, so it was special. I made my trout and prawns encroute (lovely Good Housekeeping recipe that always amazes but is truly a breeze to create). I met old friends and new, including a wonderful retired lady who was a complete mine of information on everything to do with hearing loss as she worked for many years as a teacher of the deaf. Drove very slowly home so I had a little longer chatting with my very dear friend, before she had to drive a little more speedily to rejoin her family of 6. Next week I begin work, so this was a special moment in the year.

Black History Month
Today we celebrated Black History Month. Our school held a day long assembly in which students participated in a combination of readings, dance, and singing from traditional or contemporary black authors. It was a beautiful program which the students really enjoyed.

100 Word Challenge
Alisha’s brilliant 100 Word Challenge, I’m so glad my birthday is in August!
Today was just like every other day except it was my birthday! I was getting ready for my grand arrival. Knowing there were fancy presents waiting for me on the ground below I took my time. A spark of anticipation whizzled through my body from head to toe. It was like an electric shock. Finally I was done and ready to go! As I walked out of the bathroom the spotlight boomed around me! Every
step I took my heart sunk deeper into a bowl of rainbows! I walked in the room to see NOTHING!! Baffled I said to myself ‘Oh dear… I forgot it was a leap year!’

Wandering Wilmas new recruits
Our new explorers are ready to go. They saw Wandering Wilmas plea for new recruits almost two weeks ago and after video messaging, writing letters and emailing the elusive explorer they are fully prepared fir their first expedition tomorrow! This week the intrepid 6 year olds have fine tuned their observation skills with orienteering (to find the secret message from Wilma) and used binoculars and magnifying glasses to hunt down animal clues in the undergrowth! We’ve chosen the water bottle with the largest capacity and weighed the items in our explorers rucksack to check they are the lightest options! We have even built the time machine that tomorrow we will climb aboard! So it’s a final nights sleep before we open the doors of our imagination to the first expedition! Wandering Wilma is all set to meet us tomorrow to take us back in time over 100 years! I can’t wIt! I hoot the children are as excited as their teacher!!
